A couple of weeks ago I got a tip from a co-worker about a "really nice" Strat at a store about an hour drive from here...
After questioning him some more, it turns out that is was a 50th Anniversary Deluxe that was kept in the back room for 10 years. It appears the place stopped dealing in Fenders, and this one never got sold or put on display, and was hardly played. Naturally I had my doubts that this was legit, and did my homework.

When I saw it today it still had the protective plastic on the case latches, and all the tags and accessories were there. It is in 99.9% mint condition. All the details including features, part number and serial number were correct. It's the real deal.
I spent an hour playing it there. Wow, this thing has beautiful tone, and great feeling fretboard.
So....end of story: We talked price, he took my trade-in on my American Special, and it is mine!
Woohoo!
My weekend is booked up!

Wow! You said you swapped out an Anerican Special for it. I hope your cost was minimal. The price of your new acquisition 10 years go had to be significantly lower than its equal today..

I'd post pics, but I'm not too keen to join Photobucket or similar. Is there any way to post them directly to this forum?

The price was fair. Significantly less than a current (2014) Am. Deluxe. The trade-in was good too, and knocked down the sales taxes as well.

Congradulations! I have one of the 2004 50th Anniversary American Series Strats. Fender really went out of their way to make the 50th Anniversary something special for all price points.

Extra care was given to attention to detail, such as the case, wood and parts. For myself, I really love the Fender Custom Shop 1954 pickups.
