I could get this on Stratosphere's ebay store, but the cost of shipping to Europe, plus tax makes it too expensive.

Well Pilgrim, your search has just begun. Nothing off the continent is going to be of any use to you if costs and tariffs are an issue.

I would like all this to be made out of Fender parts. The thing that I would like to do the most is get the American Vintage 59 body in Sonic Blue and John Mayer Signature neck, because it's a 60s style neck but it has a 9.5 radius. !

IMHO I don't see the point of buying a John Mayer neck... It's basically a Clapton Neck ....
You can just buy that spec neck without the overpricing of a signature.
I have played a John Mayer Custom Shop and it is a very nice feeling guitar but I would never pay the premium for that particular artist's model....

Since you want only Fender, then your choice is either E-bay or straight from the Fender store.
Personally at that point I would just order from Fender....

Or why not consider designing your own Fender thru Fender's interactive page....
By the time you are done with the time and effort of getting what you want in the color and hardware you want, you may as well just get it from Fender....
Even a parts caster with all Fender parts will not resell for the amount spent on building for probably many, many years, if not decades....

Interesting. I never got that impression from the first signature series guitar of his FMIC issued. It always felt more SRV to me. With Mayer, IMHO I'm not surprised, but I shall not digress further. [I shall avert my eyes. 8) ] I'm on board with the rest of your commentary.

Or SRV..... Doc you are correct.... He copies both SRV and Clapton so much that it's difficult to see where one leaves the other..
Not to be negative, but I find John Mayer to be not much more than a clone at this point.... I will be objective enough to see what he develops into in about ten years, but at the moment, I have not heard much that moves me to either buy his music or go to hear him in concert..... Sorry to those who revere JM... But I believe there are other lesser known artists more worthy of a signature Strat from Fender....
There, let Hail and Brimstone rain down upon me since I may have blasphemed ...

I will repeat that I did like playing the JM with the pearl tuners, it is a really nice guitar, but to me it felt very similar to Clapton's Blackie.... ( Yes there was one at Empire guitars that I got to play. it was bought by someone in Cali for $25,000.)

Ah!! 'The Black One"...the guitar project of great consternation which not only heated up these pages for months, but for which Eldred, poor guy, took an extreme amount of heat regarding the appearance of one of the pickups as compared to a photograph. Oh what a donneybrook that was. I never played one, thus I can't join your comparison. But there is a member who did own it, and is also a major Clapton guitar person. Perhaps I'll tap his shoulder on this one.
For the rest I again, concur. BTW: That's one helluva markup considering the price the guitar came out for. I think it was $12500.

Yes.... A big markup, but there are willing buyers that have the liquidity to do so....
Not for me to say Yai or Nay.... Would I own one ... ? Yes because that is a special guitar..
Is it worth the Ask Price..... Personal Q that only every buyer can answer....

I do remember those threads..... Caliante ...

This is what the Fender Build Your Own allows.

hey doc!

at least to my hand, a Clapton neck and the Mayer neck dont feel anything alike.

One is clearly a v-shape and the other a c-shape.

when comparing the Blackie tribute neck, i suppose that it is closer to a Mayer shape than a Clapton Sig but only because the Blackie is a very worn profile and has a little bit of the sharpness of the V taken off - but, still, you feel the V-shape and would immediately notice that difference compared to something like the Mayer.

in terms of thickness, the Blackie is again closer to the profile of the Mayer than a Signature Clapton is, only because the Blackie is a bit thicker than the Signature. the shoulder treatment is also different, which impacts how full the neck feels.

the BLK1 has a fairly chunky, round C-shape with a good bit of shoulder...so it is thicker and also feels thicker.

surprisingly, i find both neck types really comfortable - go figure :)

Hi...Many thanks for your input. We miss you around these parts.

I recall being told by someone who had the opportunity to handle the original Blackie on the occasion of the release of the Tribute model, that he thought the old guitar's neck felt more of a U. That would be consistent with your observations that player wear would have softened the spine of the neck. I also have a sense of that from the 21 fret neck on my prototype. It seem to have less of a taper than my '89. The original intent for Eric was to reproduce the Blackie with upgraded electronics. We don't know if they ever examined the old guitar in the process of developing the new one. But the final neck had more of a taper.

I couldn't resist a maple and rosewood neck in black gloss. Curious what it will be like.

That's exciting!

The Black Gloss finish is what, a custom request? Is that painted black then a clear gloss finish applied?

Love to hear your reactions to the quality when you receive it and see some pics.
