I just received my 60th Anniversary American Vintage 1954 Stratocaster that I ordered from GC on 1/27/14; it's a beautiful piece of work. However, I have a question about the serial numbering scheme. The serial number that is on the Strat pictured on their site is V1319126 and it has the special 60th anniversary “1st 54” engraved neck plate. Mine has the serial number V1318167 and doesn't have the “1st 54” engraved neck plate. Since I have an older serial number (V1318167), wouldn't mine have been produced before V1319126 and be one of the “1st 54”? :(

Fender doesn't necessarily use the neck plates in sequential order; they basically put them in a parts bin and assemblers grab stacks of them for their workbenches. Fender probably took a look at the last number in the bin and had those "1st 54" engraved with the next 54 numbers. Once the "1st 54" were built the assemblers would go back to the stack of AV neck plates they had on their workbench (or got out of the parts bin) for the next ones.

Congrats on your 60th Anniv 1954 Strat. Have you heard where I might buy one of the ones with 1st 54 on the neckplate? Thank you, Steve

Nice Axe !!

I asked Fender about getting one of the 1st 54 and they said they were all earmarked for Dealers and unavailable.

That's one of the lowest production runs Fender has ever done, so I don't expect to see many of them for sale... at least for some years.

cheers!

Hi Steve,
I own several Strats and everyone of them is special to me but I can tell you that this 1954 American Vintage 60th Anniversary is one of the best production Strats I've ever played and/or owned, even if it doesn't have the "1st of 54" neck plate :) You can always contact the dealers (Guitar Center, Sweetwater, Musicians Firend, etc.) and ask them if they have one with the "1st of 54" neck plate in stock. GC does list the stores around the country that have the Strat in stock but they don't tell you if it has the neck plate; you might have to contact each store individually. Good luck.

I bought one of the $1499.99, 60th Anniversary models. Already liking the satin finish maple neck. Never got to try one of the more expensive 60th models, but I'm very happy with this one. Looking forward to many years of playing it. Third Strat for me.

I had plenty to say about this 'gimmick' when the guitar was released. I brought up the free book that accompanied the first 500 Gilmour models as an example. I had hoped for one of those. I'm not surprised that GC put the photo of that guitar into their ad. I've set my mind, since then, not to be 'psyched' by their marketing ploys to get a 'run' on initial orders. :? In the Gilmour case I was satisfied that I had already purchased the 2nd edition of the book which was far superior to the 1st edition which was part of the case candy. At least you got one of the remaining 1900. That case is the same design which they used for my Custom Shop Gilmour, so that's a plus for you.
Enjoy it!

I bought one from a local music store in Lebanon Missouri, when I called to order it they already had one on order 2/13/2014 but said it would be May before they got it, well I got a call with in a month and it was at the store so I thought just maybe I got one of the 1st of 54, no luck. O well, I love the guitar anyway! My very first brand new Strat!!!!!! And I bought a used American made Hot Rod Deluxe, match made in heaven.

Went into my local GC today to inquire. The closest guitar in FL is in Orlando...4.5 hours away.

The followup to the above is that I called the local Sam Ash just to see what was happening there. They had one. Went over to check it out. It had the '1st 54' neck plate. It's mine!! 8)

I just acquired a ''1st 54'' yesterday at the Sam Ash store in Margate, FL. It was the only one of the 1954 guitars they received. The serial number is V1319094. That ought to give you some insight into the rhyme or reasoning behind Fender's serial numbering.    We gave that whole idea up after the Gilmour run. In further support of that, there's a group on Facebook named Fender Fanatics. They' ve posted a video of Paul Waller completing a masterbuilt guitar for a client, who happens to be present. Paul reaches into a bin full of wrapped neck plates, pulls one out, and that's it. :!: So let's just assume that the factory pulled 54 neck plates at random, engraved them and put them in a bin marked '1st54's'. As the builder[s] of those '54 vintage models got to the neck/body mating, they just went over to the bin and pulled out a neck plate. We can only take their word that these went on the 1st 54 guitars of the 1954 run that were to be built. How many of those guitars are spread fore and aft of -094 and-126 are impossible for us to know.
