In August last year, my girlfriend bought me an American standard Strat as a birthday present. it was bought online from a guitar shop in California. possibly surplus or unsold stock they were trying to sell before the 2014 models were released. I'm guessing that because its a three tone sunburst model (which cost a little more due to the extra work needed to spray them) nobody bought it. it was still shrink wrapped inside the hard case when it arrived.

I've just been reading a few other threads about serial numbers and grew curious about mine. as I said the guitar was purchased in August last year and was sold as a 2012 model with the fat 50's pickups instead of the noiseless pickups. on the headstock it says original contoured body under the high E tuning peg, it says made in U.S.A under the fender logo and the serial number is on the back of the headstock. on the neck plate it also says fender and Corona California.
the serial number is US13039318. does this mean its a 2013 model?
as of yet I haven't taken the neck off. but am I right in saying that the date stamped on the heel of the neck will tell me when the neck was made, and the serial number will tell me when the guitar was assembled and shipped out of the factory?

I don't doubt the authenticity of this guitar, but it would be nice to know exactly when it was made.

I believe that's the correct protocol for determining the guitar's age. Bodies and necks will often be dated earlier (some times very much so) than the date of completion for the entire instrument which the guitar's serial number indicates.

kiss nation - it is possible that the guitar is an early 2014. Since Fender tried a few different serial number formats in 2010 before settling on the "US10xxxxxx" format in late March/early April of that year the numbers now seem to "change over" each year in March. From the mid-1990s through 2009 that "changeover" seemed to happen in January - but that was really the only period in Fender's history where these serial number codes were somewhat close to being "on track" with the calendar year.

As you and Arjay say - you can take it apart to check the dates or you can email Fender and they can give you the "born on" date.

Rob Schwarz (one of this forum's moderators) will tell you everything that's known about the guitar -- what color it was, what neck radius, what pickups, and when it was shipped from Corona.
