I bought what I am told, a 2006 Fender Stratocaster Deluxe. Great axe. On my Strat I've only got the volume knob that the center pushes in to create new tones. I've noticed on some newer Deluxes, theres a pushbutton down by the tone controls now. What does that do? What am I missing out on?

It would seem that your guitar is equipped with the S-1 switching system.

Are the pickup covers marked with an embossed "SCN"?

It is a "Passing Lane" switch. When activated, it bypasses all switching, tone and volume controls, and puts the hum-bucker pup directly to the output jack.

Arjay-yes, the pickups are marked SCN. Got rid the Les Paul Traditional I had for this guitar. Kinda hesitant to get it at first, but it sounds great thru my old '72 Twin Reverb, plus it's so much lighter. Mine looks just like the pic in the thread, minus the extra pushbutton by the tone controls. Even my 19 year old son likes it better than the Les Paul-"has more spank" he says. What do you think a used 2006 in near mint Stratocaster Deluxe is worth on the open market?

With the S-1 system, you'll find that you have access to ten distinct pickup-combination selections. I believe the factory wiring configurations have evolved over the years so you might check Fender's support section for a diagram showing all of the switching possibilities for your specific guitar.

Hey masterhacker, I've got the same version of the Am Dlx Strat as you, a version 2 with S-1 switch, SCN pups, 2 point bridge, pop in whammy bar and locking/staggered tuners. Those models were introduced in 2004 but mine is dated Dec. 2003 just missing out on the Anniversary badge. :(

This is the Fender Service Diagram: http://support.fender.com/service_diagrams/stratocaster/011-2004803A_SISD.pdf

On page four they show the way the S-1 was set up to change the normal 5 way pattern, at that time. The S-1 isn't confined to those switching possibilities and later on Fender changed the configuration.

Needless to say modders have done their own config hacks without even asking permission!

Mine is the 2 tone Sunburst with tinted Maple Neck....

...and this is what's waiting under the hood for the adventurous...
