I'm thinking of buy a strat that I came across. It has a natural ash body with a white pick guard and a maple neck. The seller say's it's an American Strat and it does say made in USA on the neck but I can't find any info on this set up. It plays pretty sweet and looks fairly new. I couldn't find a blemish on it. Guy is asking 700.00. If anyone knows anything about it. I would appreciate a heads up.

Thanks
Daniel

Hey Daniel, Great name and welcome to the forums. :D

I take it you've played it and like it but you're not certain that it's a genuine Am Std Strat?

You need to provide some specific information and/or pictures or refer to a listing, if there is one, to get any kind of input.

The serial number tells a lot about a Strat. Once you've got that you can narrow it down to a year of production and certain features.

That is the dream version of the Strat for me, my rosebud so to speak!

I put some cash down on it and there is a serial number on my receipt. Serial #N9423721. Near as I can tell it is a 99. I think the 21 means natural ash. Not sure about the rest.

Yes, it may be a 1999 or a 2000.

The 21 does not mean ash.

Have you Googled that number? If you find other guitars with other it, that means it's fake.

Specific information about a given instrument would be contained within the guitar's model number as assigned and designated by Fender.

Ok, so it's probably 14 or 15 years old and comes with a hard case. I can't believe this guitar is that old. It literally looks brand new. I had my les paul three days and put a nick in the top next to the bridge. How do you go 15 years without so much as a pick scratch on the guard? Anyway, considering the ash body, the case, and the condition of the guitar, I'm thinking 700 is probably a fair price. Maybe I can get them to throw in some strings or something. Not a bad deal considering a new one is 1250.00.

If you the think it's a bit 'fishy' that the guitar looks too new for its age, there's a good chance there could be something not totally legit about the guitar. Photos speak a thousand words etc.

If I'm remembering correctly you could get an American Standard in a natural finish/ash body back in the late 1990s; the serial number you posted would be from 1999 or early 2000.

You could also send the serial number to Fender at consumerrelations@fender.com; they can look it up and verify what that serial number tracks to.

If the guitar wasn't used much, then an American Standard would certainly have held up like that over the years - the poly finish on these is pretty tough.

Speaking personally...the Natural Ash, Maple, White look is a fine one indeed...expecting the grain and finish to be top grade.

It is not so strange to find guitars suffering long years without proper use and enjoyment...and looking showroom fresh.

We suspect by now it is not possible for you to post pictures for our consideration...it would help us help you with your decision...

Cheers.

I would like to thank everyone for their responses. I am headed to the music store this afternoon to take some pics and verify the serial number. I will post the pics when I return home and I hope you will like them. I definitely need to nail down the exact specs on this guitar. I don't mind spending money but I expect to get what I'm paying for.

As do we all. You're wise to take precautions.

could be jumping the gun a bit here but....
serial tracks back to a 010-7402-721= Am Std Strat Maple neck, natural finish (the "21" at the end of the part number) completed 1/18/2000 and shipped to a Dealer in MD.

All the best,
rob
