I want to build my own stratocaster but i dont want a tremolo setup...i never use it on my other strat and feel its easier to bend and play with a non-tremolo setup...did Fender make strat bodies specifically made for a set bridge? Or did they just put a set bridge on a tremolo hollowed out body?

More importantly where can i find a body like this if they exist?

Heres what i have in mind...HSS setup...lemme know what you think!

-Black body
-WB pickups, VTPH bridge HB, and their high output S pickups for middle and neck
-Vintage style set bridge
-Vintage style machine heads
-3 ply Parchment pickguard
-Rosewood fingerboard

Mmm, interesting. Never been to that Carvin site before. Thanks for that link.

I'm not seeing options on finished bodies there, so if the OP wants the lacquering done for him, he could also have a look at www.warmoth.com. The only issue with Warmoth is a nice one: too much choice. I just checked, and a Strat body made up for hardtail in black is beginner's stuff for them.

You are going to be dazzled by all the choice, and suddenly you are going to find yourself thinking about a birdseye neck with fancy inlays, binding - in tortoiseshell, say? - a facing on the headstock, an AAAAA grade front on that body under an azure burst nitro finish... etc, etc, etc.

The sky's the limit: Warmoth are the working man's custom shop. Go mad!

Warmoths a good site as well I have a Thunderbird project guitar I made from there parts. I would have mentioned it as well I just usally think of the Carvin site beecause they are a little cheaper. Also if you have a place that does custom paint like a car shop or bike shop close by they can usally paint your guitar however you like for cheaper than what warmoth charges for there paint jobs

Ah-ha! The thorny subject of auto-paint finishes on guitar bodies. Now that's a whole very long thread all by itself! Thoughts, anyone?

Haven't "they" been using auto-paint on guitars since the '50s?

By "they" I mean all the big-boys, Fender, Gibson ...

Yeah, it's been done a lot. With varying results.

That's the way I understand it. I love the new Honda blood red color.

Yes, warmoth is very cool. I've been telling myself that I'm going to have a custom "something" made by them, but I haven't gotten around to it. Almost too many choice.

One day, maybe a spalted strat, or a bubinga jazzmaster. So many choices...

Great, that's the idea: go wild! If you come up with something really funky remember to post some pics here. Good luck - C

Yeah, it's been done a lot. With varying results.

Now, this is the thorny aspect of the question. In the 50s Fender, Gibson and others frequently picked their colors from automotive color charts. Perhaps Leo played a similar game to me on a long drive: check out other cars to see which one has a paint job that would go well on a guitar.

Of course, they were using paints from Du Pont's Duco nitro-cellulose line: not the same formulation as was being sprayed onto car bodies.

For those as don't know, paint consists fundamentally of two elements: the pigment, which gives the color, and the binder or medium in which that pigment is suspended. So you could have three Arctic White Strats, one with a nitro-cellulose finish, one with polyester and one with polyurethane. Same pigment each time, different binder.

Fender's original Custom Colors (e.g. Fiesta Red) were pigments lifted from cars, but usually (maybe not always) formulated as nitro lacquers. (You don't use nitro-cellulose on a car body, for rather obvious reasons).

What luthiers generally get sniffy about is the idea of spraying a can of automotive paint onto a guitar body. Partly it's snobbery: "a quality guitar should have a nitro finish, period" (not necessarily true: think Martin). Partly it is because it is very difficult to find out what the heck is actually in an aerosol of car paint, and therefore how to work with it in the situation of a wood base. Manufacturers are reluctant to put too much information on the can - commercial secrets.

And yet the truth is the world is full of guitars with auto formula paint on them, either for ease of use, or because it is the only way to get hold of a particular color. Which all makes a bit of a nonsense of the supposed superiority of nitro-cellulose...

Or does it? Whatchathink?

Sure can. You can also specify the cavity routing to your specific bridge/tremolo at no addtional charge. You even have the option of bodies with rear mounted electronics.
