You cannot order a discontinued model, either from FMIC or the CS. Richie's relationship with Fender ceased as of 2002.

It's the second and last incarnation of the guitar with the American Vintage hardware, small star inlays, dual coil ceramic stacks and 12dB boost.

This revised version of the Sambora Strat was made between 1999 and 2002, date during which Richie's endorsement deal with Fender ended.

Welcome to the Forums. There were two versions of the Sambora. One made in the US aka MIA and the other made in Mexico aka MIM.
The specs on these guitars differed. I am certain that we will have a pictorial reply from Chromeface differentiatiing these two instruments for your enlightenment. Ebay, Craig's List, or other opportunities will have to be your resource with respect to obtaining one. The important thing is that you be able to compare and contrast what is being offerred for sale.

Thanks for the info. I wonder why the change?

We've had conversation on this guitar in several threads across the past 6.5 years. We've never been privy to the inside 'skinny' on what makes or breaks an endorsement deal. If I were a betting man I would put money on the likelihood that Sambora didn't have a following strong enough to spur volume sales for his guitar though his CD "Stranger In Town'' is one I enjoy listening to.

The original Sambora Strat was modeled after Richie's customized HRR 50s Strat crafted by Todd Krause.

Essentially this model was an HRR 50s fitted with two Texas Special singles, a DiMarzio Custom PAF Pro humbucking pickup and TBX/MDX tone shaping circuits with a special push-push switch to turn off the "Elite" preamp.

Other fine touches were his trademark graduated "star" inlays on the fingerboard and Schaller Elite tuners with white pearloid puttons.

The USA Sambora Strat was offered in two finishes, cherry sunburst and olympic white - though there was also a US version of the MIJ Black Paisley built exclusively for him that featured switchable "Elite" electronics and Texas Special pickups.

MIJ Samboras were offered in a variety of finishes ranging from the aforementioned black paisley graphics to snow white and cherry sunburst. Additionally they sported two RS single-coils in the neck & middle, lacking off the MDX mid boost circuit.

From 1996 and afterwards Richie began using the first transitional prototypes built by Todd, one of which was finished in Aztec Gold and the other sported a tortoiseshell pickguard and gold-plated hardware. Production of these prototypes shifted to Japan c. 1997/98.

The revised MIA Samboras finally came into surface in 1999, lasting only 3 years.

The MIM Standard was featured with a 21-fret rosewood fretboard, two standard alnico single-coil pickups and Floyd Rose II locking vibrato systems. Though this guitar was discontinued since 2002, Fender offers a MIM Standard HSS LT with about the same specs as Sambora's own guitar, which is available through Guitar Center.

There are sellers who represent that the quality of the production line guitars falls as one moves into the later dated models, finishes, and country of origin...e.g MIA, MIM, MIJ. Of course, the masterbuilt one-offs are not part of this discussion. There's a seller on eBay offering a Cherry Burst model but he swapped out the pickups. I told him that, IMHO, under the circumstances, he was asking too much for the guitar. However, I trust someone will buy it. Certainly not me if it isn't stock. There is one, stock, asking twice the price, as well as a Sambora-owned guitar, signed, in a presentation case, for a handsome asking.

The Chinese counterfeiters seem to love the Sambora model, so be very careful.

Roger that! Fender consumer relations will run and verify a serial number for you if you are seriously considering a purchase. Sometimes they'll even send you the entire spec sheet on the guitar. Write to
consumerrelations@fender.com
