It is once again time to return to the build section of the Forum...
It would actually be really nice if the powers that be... ( Brad... Rob... ) could perhaps add a new section totally dedicated to build threads, where we all could post a build and not have to painfully search the archives....

Anyway, to begin... I have Two bodies, both cut from the same baulk of ash...
At this point they are only rough contoured, into the shape of a Stratocaster body.
The grain characteristics are a bit different from one to the other so I will upload pics of both front and back...
Whichever one isn't chosen will be the one that will become a Cherry sunburst / Rosewood neck Stratocaster.....

On to the subject at hand, I do have a pic of a Mary Kay Stratocaster to upload so that everyone knows where I am heading .... 8) :?:

Yup. Ordering a "mary kaye" got you the blonde finish paired with the gold hardware, and the neck in use at the time, so the 59's and after were mostly RW.

Thanks Doc... That is my preferred choice also but thought I would throw it out there...
Now the other thought is would it still be a Mary Kaye clone if the pick guard was deleted and it was all back routed.... :?: :?: :?
I just dislike the pick guard when a body is nicely grained .... I feel it hides the wood and Yes... a pick guard can be nice but..... A slight deviation is also fun... 8)

an irony is that although Leo Fender promised Mary the Strat from the promo (that she appeared playing in the movie "Cha-Cha-Cha Boom!" it was mistakenly returned to Fender and she never pursued getting it back, so she never actually owned one of her namesake guitars until much later.

Thanks Twelve bar.... I'm going to look into both of my books " The Stratocaster Chronicles " as well as " The Dream Factory " Fender Custom Shop....
Picking up 2 more books over the weekend... Which will pretty much round out what I need for reference material.....

To begin with....
Hardware of course will be gold, but these tuners will be what I will use..
They are Deluxes by Grover... Much nicer than the Gotoh vintage repro's and if at all possible a 1950's Mary Kaye Stratocaster should have parts all made stateside....

Image

Actually ( editing ) I cannot use these as they are not the vintage type where the string enters the post vertically than wraps around the post ...

Good idea. Reminds me of Ceri's project guitar, when he re-incarnated the body Niki sent him. Consider using pickups without pole pieces..EMG's or Lace Sensors. White control knobs without numerals. That will focus the eye on the grain pattern. Definitely a very lightly tinted one piece rock maple neck in satin finish like the photo. That should be 'like awesome and amazing', consistent with contemporary usage.

53Magnatone...just a thought, why not go with Klusons? They are available. I have my popcorn ready for this build. Really looking forward to this one. I have played a 56 Mary Kaye on a couple occasions (friend had it but didn't like it much, go figure!) and that V neck on it and that finish were simple one of the greatest guitars I have every played!

Get busy!

Yes.... But I wonder if I'll be able to order a neck from Fender that will work visually...
Is there any way to ask for a specific pattern ... :?:
