Hi guys,

I am a big fan of the SRV Strat. I recently noticed on some pics that the dots on the 12th fret have been moved further apart to pre63 spacing.

These are two different guitars.

Is this common knowledge and I have missed something? On the Fender page the pics are still with the post 63 narrow spacing

Earlier Strats had wider dot spacing on the 12th.
It's normal.
IIRC I think '63 was the year that they changed it and there were guitars with both spacings.
There are others on the site more in the know than I.
We have some true experts here.
Perhaps someone can confirm or deny my recollection of that issue.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

+1

Another significant development that occurred in 1963 was the changeover from slab-board construction to a laminated fret board. And the 12th fret dot-spacing can be seen both ways on both types of necks. Early lam-boards from 1964 may also be encountered with the original "spaghetti" logo -- the "transitional" logo for the Strat seems to have been introduced in mid-year.

Yup, one of my guitars has a NOV 1964 neck date stamp and has the "transition" logo.

I believe they also changed the composition of the neck dots that year.

Indeed.

"Clay" to pearloid.

The question isn't about the specs of original '60s guitars -- the OP makes reference to being aware that the dot spacing changed back in '63.

The question is whether they recently changed the dot spacing on the SRV Signature model from modern narrow to vintage wide. I don't know the answer to that, but the website specs and pics often lag behind changes.

The spacing of the dots looks the same to me but without measuring the dot spacing I can't tell.

I'm pretty sure the spacing is the same in the two photos. It's the angle of the guitar that makes them look a little different. The SRV Strats have always been made the same except for maybe fret board materials. I've seen some advertised as having Pau Ferro fret boards and some advertised as Rosewood.

Guys I think I didn't express myself properly. My question concerned the SRV Strat. Did Fender change the spacing of the dots here recently? I found pics of two SRV Strats on the net that have wide spacing instead of narrow. Has Fender updated the SRV Strat recently?

Sorry, it was just a slightly informative thread hijacking.

The evidence says no -- all authentic SRV Strats feature narrow dot spacing at the twelfth fret (regardless of year of issue or type of fretboard lumber).

The two Strats you've linked to in your original post are apparently clones.

I ask because I considered myself the only one on the planet with such wide spaced dots and I added them while changing the fretboard from Pau Ferro to Brazilian Rosewood. I also corrected the radius to 7.25 because the fingerboard thickness of the factory SRV is ridiculous.

I also prefer the 7.25" radius -- likely because that's what I learned to play on nearly fifty years ago. The flatter boards are more akin to that found on a Gibson.

The owner of one of the guitars with wide spacing contacted me in the meantime, saying that the Strat is a 2009

Look what I immediately found on youtube:

... or here
http://docteurseb.com/2009/11/12/guitar ... atocaster/

...or here

These are all 2009s!

Seems that Fender made a nice factory error on a run, accidentally correcting the dot spacing :-)
