According to Tony Bacon in his History of Fender Stratocaster the 5 way switch was introduced in Fender guitars in 1977, but had been available as an aftermarket item.

No one seems to know when the RW/RP middle pickup became the standard in Strats. The reverse wound, reverse polarity was offered by Seymour Duncan shortly after the 5 way became available, and those pickups may have been used on MIJ Strats.

I did come across this letter, dated July 15, 1980, purported to be from Eric Johnson to Seymour Duncan ordering three pickups rewound and the middle to be "opossite wrap of other two so that both 'out of phase' position will cancel hum". Total cost $67.00 inc. s&h. :D

That the old Strats has 3 regular wound pickups and then later, after the introduction of the 5-way switch they started RW the middle pickup to cut on hum in 2 & 4. At least I think that is what happened. I don't think that would have change the tone too much, if so.

However, if memory serves, when I set the 2 or 4 position using the 3-way switch, it cut the hum.

I just cant remember if it was hum canceling or not all I can remember was it had a 5 way already installed and I didnt even know back then that was not stock. I was 16 and just to be jammin on a real American Icon that Jimi Hendrix David Gilmour and Ritchie Blackmore played was magical. But I do recall the guy at the store talking to my mom about rewiring and doing some things to it so I suspect that was it.

I was told years ago, and Eric Johnson seems to think the same way, that by Reverse Winding the middle pickup it canceled any hum one would get in 2 & 4— by having all the pickups wounds normal. Odd sidelight it, all the Texas Special pickups are RW.... I never did understand that. :?

Cool! Mine was a 72 or 73. Then a few years later I picked up a 68. Man I wished I would have kept them!

I have been tempted many times to buy one of the American Vintage Reissues :)

Without having the magnets in reverse polarity?

Well, I guess if you only do the RW, you will get the hum canceling out, but you will also get a lot of the tones canceling out too. So you will get a real thin and weak sound, but it won't hum!. (That's seeing the silver lining.)

BTW, you can get the RW effect by simply swapping where you solder the black and white leads of the middle pickup.

Back in the day of the 3 way switch being standard, players found that they could set the switch in between the 3 positions and get a whole new tone (strat quack for example) and with a RWRP mid, buck hum. Hence the birth of the 5 way switch.

I don't use the 2 and four much, but find them to be very useful as a tool to quiet the beast between songs.

SCN pickups are noiseless so 2 and 4 have no noise reducing effect.

Isn't signal phasing still produced (AKA Quack)?

Evolution of pickup design, wiring schemes, and sound reproduction is the reason why I was very specific as to the gear I was using and referencing. You'd have to find an 'original' '58 and a similar vintage amp for the comparison. Just as an aside, it boggles me that Fender put a 5-way switch in the 60th Anniv '54 Heavy Relic and American Vintage Guitars, with a 9.5r neck and 'contemporary' bridge on the former, but a 7.5r and vintage bridge on the latter. Yet they charging 'bucks' to beat the crap out of the former in the Custom Shop. They should have done both guitars with an NOS platform, a relic finish on one just like they did with the Gilmour, and give the customer their choice. IMHO the '54 American Vintage gives you more vintage vibe and bang for the buck. However, they should have factory wired it with a 3-way. Once the buyer changes it out, the warranty is voided.
