I just bought the 20th ann box set with all of the alt. takes and jams.

The jams alone were worth the price of this box set and the info inside was cool also.

"clapton walks in with a small champ and a pignose amp"

if you have never heard the extra stuff on this set and your a strat junkie like me, do yourself a favor and find it !!!!

claptons got that out of phase strat sound working.

Man I absolutely love the 70’s Clapton sound. Nothing against his sound now but it just does something for me

its just the idea that all that tone and sound was done with little bare bones amps.

I hear ya about EC's older tones, however I think since he changed over to the vintage pups and got rid of the lace ones, it has gotten back to excellent again.

I do use a pedal myself, only for clean boost and it is colorless to my tone.

At this stagr of the game I'm thinking that is at least 50% tone or your sound!

Your playing could be terrible but if you can get an amp and strat to sound like, say, JH, you've got it made!

Give the Dominos "In Concert" and "Live at the Filmore" a listen.
Both releases share cuts but also have cuts not common to both so you'll get lots of variety. You'll hear EC make mistakes too; just like the 20th Anniv. collection. My solid state Peavy Chorus 70 and the lace pickups on my EC strat very well near duplicate the tone; but I can get just as close with the noiseless on the EC too. Maybe it's the preamp?
Sure would like to know what his set up was on those concerts. I have a Roberty Book on the subject but he doesn't cover AMPS ....

I believe he used a late 50's Champ for that session. He used a 40W Pignose for 461 Ocean Blvd. He likes his small amps.

Bet those amps didn't have the original speakers or tubes in them!!!!! Probably some EQing going on in the control room as well.

Yes I have the D & the d's in concert on vinyl and really love the old days of recording before it took months of editing and remixing to remove any and all "flaws" in a performance.

Music is best when it is at it's most organic if you will, after all it is the human voice we are trying to harmonize with or copy.

I about flipped when I found it on CD! My vinyl copy disapearred when I went into the service; so it was like 3 years later i found it. I wrote to Original Master Recording and suggested the title in 1980;I got a catalog and a "we regret" letter; a couple years ago I saw a OMR disk of that LP....

Sounds like I need to pick up one of these. I searched ebay, and Google last night but I must have been searching for the wrong thing. Could you give me a link to a picture of it or anything with info. about it? Thanks

its Derek & The Dominos
AKA clapton

I went in the studio and played the whole thing (in Concert) yesterday after our brief chat about the live version and what it really boils down to is some very long jam sessions that sound great !!!!

now I am sure he was using bigger amps for the concert, dont ya think ???
I dont think they miked up small amps for shows back in those days.

anyhow glad we brought the subject up and again the studio jam sessions on the box set (Layla and other Love Songs) is worth a listen too.

No, they were using bigger amps for shows. As far as I'm concerned, those Layla sessions were the peak of blues based rock.

I have Layla on vinyl... I'm definitely going to have to look for this box set. Is it a new release? I've never seen it before.
