Is it worth the extra money? Why or why not?

Going from one end of the spectrum to the other - I own both and both are definitely worth the $$$ IMHO!

Hello PlikityPlack

I also have both, my deluxe seems to feel
a little better finished you'll also get
locking tuners, scn pickups, s-1 switch,
relieved neck area on body. Block bridge saddles
Strap locks
Abalone inlay dots.

But I like the pickups in my am. std.
and I will install lockers. Bent steel bridge saddles
White dots.

Go play em both.

Cheers.

I recently purchased a custom strat deluxe and it was worth every penny. While the standard strats are excellent fine tuned instruments I feel that I get more use and versatility out of the deluxe. I would say that it depends on the taste of the musician and what he/she is looking to achieve sonically.

I have to say I really like my 2008 Am Standard, it's extremely light and sounds wonderful - but then again I only wanted a regular strat. My tuners hold very well though it helps that I don't use the trem bar, I prefer the tremelo set up on my PRS Z06.

The deluxes are sweet guitars, but I'm voting standard.

I was thinking of buying the deluxe but then when the 2008 standard came I bought that one. If feel that the deluxe is to complicated. I just want a guitar that a can play and fun with ans sure, you can have fun with a deluxe but you have so many options of pickups and other things going on that it feels more lika a machine then a guitar. That's what I think.

I own both. 2 American Dlx models and 1 MIM strat.

I prefer the American Deluxe models and are worth the extra $$ paid.

The fit, finish, quality of the parts, etc. make playing the Am Dlx guitars much more enjoyable.

Not to say the MIM strat is not a good guitar. For the $ it is probably 1 of the best guitars on the market.

Each individual will have to decide for themselves.

I've played on Deluxes many times, but never owned one. I've owned a numbers of Standards though. Although a deluxe is certainly a little nicer and a bit more refined, I'm fine with a Standard. I've modifed my standard to put in different pickups, custom phase wiring and locking sperzels, and I've played it enough over the last 10 years to wear the frets and neck down very nicely, so it plays like a dream.

If I were to buy a new strat right now and wanted to keep it stock, I'd probably get the deluxe. But I'm so happy with my current 98 MIA, I have no intention of getting another strat, and could care less if I ever got another electric in general (although a custom PRS 513 rosewood is rather nice:)

well i own( 2 ) american standards. (3 ) 2006 upgrade and 2007's highway ones. a vintage 1968 strat and a 1970 vintage strat and a 2006 MIM strat that has been hot roded. now after all this i have played a deluxe a few times and i must say that my american standards in my opinion are a better guitar tone/playability. BUT my highway ones and my 1968 strats i enjoy playing the most.

I would guess that the deluxes are next to get a make over like the standard just did. I'm sure everyone will be sweating the new deluxes when they come out. I would bet they'll have new pickups (more alnico-like nioseless ie kinman and dimarzio) along with all the upgrades to the standard (bent saddles, heavier block, thinner undercoat, one string tree etc) ... probably some kind of new locking tuner rig. Maybe a thin skin finish?... doubt it but that's what I would do.

Agreed! I think the the p/u's on the American Std (I have an '05 American Series) are quiet enough and I don't really need the extra P/U combinations. With that said, my Highway 1 Strat is my go to guitar because it's just more fun to play. My Hwy Tele gets a lot of play, too.

Hello again PlickityPlack,

I forgot to mention that the Deluxe
has a pop in tremolo arm as opposed to
the screw in.

Cheers.

Thanks for all the input. I know that I need to go and try both myself to see which is better but I wanted to see which majority preferred, and if the actual specifications of the deluxe make it worth that much more than the standard. With the new 2008 standard models it makes it kind of difficult...does anyone know if Fender is planning on releasing any 2008 deluxe models???

Gotta cast a vote for the Deluxes personally. I own one and I think it was WELL worth the extra money for the upscale features. Mine's a V-neck which I find VERY comfortable, and I'm not sure you can get that neck shape in a Standard; so if you want a V-neck and can't afford reissue or Custom Shop prices, the Deluxe is a great value. Also, I'd say any guitar with a tremolo needs locking tuners; so had I bought a Standard that's one mod I would have had to do on my own. Add the S-1 switch and upgraded pickups, and I start to wonder why anyone would buy a Standard when you can get all the upgrades for a couple hundred extra.

NOW, I should add that I bought mine in '06 before these new Standards came out. I've played some of the new Standards and they totally destroy the Standards from just a few years ago. The difference in quality between a NEW Standard and Deluxe might be questionable; but 2.5 years ago when I was shopping, it seemed like a no-brainer. I HAD to get the Deluxe.

I would go with the HSS Deluxe, to avoid the bridge SCN that I don't like and for added versatility in tone. The main reason is my Highway One slightly modded with Custom Shop Tx Special pickups and five springs is a great classic Strat that I prefer to the American Standard.
