Changing anything electrical or mechanical will void the warranty. You can't really expect Fender to guarantee a Seymour Duncan pickup. Or your soldering!

I don't want to put words into Fender's mouth but I would think that changing pickups would just void the warranty on the electronics but you would still have your warranty on the neck, body, and hardware. I could be wrong on that; I've never really read the fine print on the Fender warranty.

It depends on where you live.

In the US, the Magnusson-Moss act of 1975 specifically prevents manufacturers from voiding the warranty due to use of parts from other vendors, as long as those parts are "equivalent". You will lose the warranty on the pickups you replace, obviously, but for the rest of the guitar, they have to show a possibility that the 3rd party part could have caused the damage.
This change in the warranty laws came about because of car manufacturers who voided the warranty when people installed 3rd party parts.
Manufacturers get around some of the restrictions by not offering full warranties anymore, only "limited warranty". But they're still bound by regulations, and not everything they put in the warranty text is necessarily binding - national and state laws take precedence.

In Europe, you have even more protection - there the manufacturer not only have to show a possibility, but the onus is on them to show that it was the third party part that was at least in part responsible for the damage.

That doesn't stop manufacturers from trying to say the warranty will be voided, of course. But law trumps manufacturer statements.

What kind of tie is a "garantie" anyway, and what does it have to do with Fender?

Pretty much what JohnC and arth1 are saying. I would love to have a Global Warranty Policy, but as arth1 touches on, every country has different laws and rules on this subject, which makes that difficult, if not impossible to implement.
What is important to me and consequently to Fender Customer Service, is the "spirit" of the warranty....and again, that's pretty much as JohnC put it.

Warranty covers defects in manufacturing or workmanship.

We try to be as reasonable as possible with that. If you change out the pickups, hardware etc. and the neck goes south, it's still on us for the neck. If you change out the pickups and your screwdriver slips and dings the body....reasonably, you shouldn't expect us to cover the cost of a new body.
All the best,
rob

Common sense and doing what's right - wish it was contagious, and would spread to all other companies!

I remember back in the early 80s, when the motor on a turntable died. They (big company, starts with an M) refused to honor the warranty because I had put in a new pickup. That's not common sense, or making the customers want to come back and buy more. So I didn't - 30 years and counting. :D
