Hi there. I recently ordered a new American deluxe in 3 tone strat with a rosewood board. I wanted to replace the 62 strat that was cruelly taken from me about 15 years ago (long story). After the guitar came in I went to guitar center to pick it up. And when I inspected it I noticed a lot of dark lines showing through the finish. Like, aside from the natural grain in the wood, it had dark lines from where the wood has cracks or splits in it (lots of wood is naturally like this). Naturally I had them return it and order another. So after another week wait the new one came in. And what do you know, same crap. New one looks like crap too. Ugly cracks and splits in the wood just like the first one. I look at every guitar they have for sale in the store and none of them look like this. I showed the manager what I expected from a newly ordered guitar and showed him the beautiful grain of just about every sunburst guitar in the store that was on display. Even the wood on the 500$ fender looked beautiful by comparison. What I want to know is how the hell did these make it past QC. That wood should have been used for painted bodies. not bodies with transparent finishes. And how the hell did I end up with 2 in a row. Hopefully 3rd time is a charm. But I will have them return and reorder as many times as necessary. Does fender just not care?

So what you're saying is you didn't buy a guitar you didn't like then the store got another one you didn't like so you didn't buy that either?

I never understand how people can buy a guitar without seeing it and playing it. I spend at least a week going round various music stores, trying a few guitars in each, go home, sleep on it, make a decision, go and try the guitar again, maybe change my mind, come back the next day and then make a purchase. The idea of just sending money to someone and expecting them to send me a guitar that I'll love just doesn't seem right to me.

If you can get refunded if it doesn't turn out well, I don't think it's all bad. At least you don't end up buying something in the store that kids have played around with, banging into who knows what, and tried to bash the hell out of. Even between you first playing it and then coming back for it.

In my view, a guitar that's been handled by a hundred hands is like a woman who's been handled by a hundred hands.

Stores round here don't just hand expensive guitars to kids! Most staff are pretty good at figuring out who's got the money and who's a dreamer before they go taking a guitar down off the wall. Even though I have bitter teenage memories of sales staff "demoing" a guitar in front of me without allowing me to play it, I can see why they did it now.

Another good trick is to find out when they're getting a delivery in and turn up before the guitars have been on display very long.

It's a little hard to go around and try out a bunch of guitars when you know what you want but no one within 100 miles has it in stock. Ordering one is literally the only option. And yes I have pics of the first one. not the second. But I am new to this site and cant seem to find where to attach or upload one

Can you show us pics of the offending guitars?

Those "cracks" are probably just alder grain lines.

Possibly.

But lumber such as that is considered by many (including myself) to be unattractive and unbecoming for use as a premium guitar body with a transparent finish. As the OP mused, those guitars should've been relegated to a solid opaque-color finish.

We did not have a post on this subject few months ago ? With photos of these "dark" line ? I'm sure I see that here.

Guitar stores here in Ireland will mostly stock the mid range Guitars, rarely high end. I had to buy a Rickebacker 360 online last year because you will not find a Rickenbacker in any store here. It was a huge leap of faith that thankfully paid off. Not all of us are lucky to be able to decide on our next Guitar and then go and play it.
