I just bought a 50th Anniversary Fender SRV Strat on eBay. The seller said in was a 1996 model. There is a 50th Anniversary sticker next to the Serial Number which start with: "SE9..." . In my understanding that S/number relates to year 1989 or 1990. All guitar details in pictures seems genuine. Is there a reason to believe this is a fake SRV? . Does it make sense that a 1990 Serial Number will have a 1996 50th anniversary sticker?. Thank you for your help !

is a good clue.
AFAIK there have never been any 50th Anniversary Fender SRV Strats made.

I'm sure the good folk on this forum will comment in due course, so in the meantime how's about posting some pictures of the beast in question?

Well the body is legit.
The neck is correct in that it has 21 frets and gold hardware - any images from the front of the headstock?

My suspicion is the the neck and body are genuine Fender USA products, but they never left the factory as one guitar - someone else put them together.

The full length shot of the guitar with the SRV signature on the headstock has a tortoiseshell pickguard.
The shots of just the body show a black SRV pickguard.

So something doesn't sit right with me.

JFYI the strap buttons have also been changed out for Schaller strap locks - the ones the SRV model came with were traditional ones with gold plating.

Hmmmm.....something fishy, besides what the post above says. :?

The guitar looks legit, but the serial number is in the wrong location, and it also looks like the wrong format, meaning that the SE9 should be the same size font, followed by six digits, but it looks like SE followed by six digits. The sticker doesn't match the apparent year, although it isn't written as E9, but E followed by a separate 924492.

Puzzling. Could this be a replacement neck, or even a faked serial number?

Compare to the one shown on the Fender site, the "360" view allows you to look at the back of the guitar also.

Yeah, how many different guitars are we looking at here in the OPs pics?

From: www.stevieray.com/srv-strat.htm

The Serial Number Problem
The difficulty in determing where your SRV Strat fits into the production line lies in the fact that Fender serial numbering, apparently, has only to do with internal stock control and not particular dates of manufacture. The SE9xxxx decals were probably purchased for use in 1989, but weren't used on SRV's until 1992. Further complicating matters, the SRV did not have its own block of numbers. In other words, SE905653 is an SRV, but SE905654 may be a Jeff Beck Strat or something else.
You would think that the lowest serial numbers would be the oldest and be the ones with Brazilian rosewood, but one fan says he has seen an SE9046xx with pau ferro, and SE905xxx's and SE906xxx's with Brazilian. It appears that all the SE91xxxx's and later numbers are the pau ferro, however.

I suspect that it is an actual SRV Strat. Everything looks ligit (to include the fret board wood). 2 things that stand out as being a problem.

1. That sticker means nothing. It was a sticker that EVERY FENDER INSTRUMENT RECEIVED IN 1996.

2. The S/N on the back of the neck is in question. I have 2 schools of thought on this. The SRV Strat was released in 1992. 1. Take the neck off and look at the dates stamped (written) written on neck and neck joint. That will tell you exactly when the guitar was made.

2. Fender is notorious for using old S/N on their necks. My 2004 50th Aniv. Am. Series Strat has an '03 S/N. I bought it early in the years.

Having said that I suspect that Fender used older parts for this guitar.

Also, ask the Fender experts who are on this forrum. They are great resource

The guitar pick w/ the tort pickgaurd and the pic w/ the black "SRV" pickgaurd....
Looks like two diff bodies... scope the wood grain by the upper bout where the contour cut is.... does anyone else see how the grain looks different.... the swirl goes in opposite directions.. at least... that what seeing on this end.... Two different bodies...

I hadn't looked that closely, but you're right.

The grain at the heel of the neck might show differences too, although from what I can make out the photos are of the same neck.
The fingerboards tell a different story, easy noticeable from the 15th fret up ...

+1

And note how the lighter area of the sunburst finish extends into the upper horn area on the body with the black SRV pickguard when compared to the body with the tortoise-shell guard.
