My American Deluxe sounds better than any of the strats my friends have, and they all remark on that to me. There is something to be said for putting out $1700 for something instead of $800. The MIM guitars are good guitars, but let's not kid ourselves that they are just as good or really close, because unless you do some serious upgrading, it's like having a supermodel compared to a kinda cute girl that works at Walmart.

He could have bought an American Standard with that same money and not needed the upgrade.

this makes a good case for buying Mexican strats and doing some simple cheap upgrades. He ended up with 2 usable guitars for the price of your 1 usable guitar. :D

That old bumper sticker still holds true, Hungry? Eat your import.

Hey, didn't you just buy a Line 6 amp (mostly imported from China)? Did you order fried rice with that? :?

In this particular case, the Classic Player 50s (ann or otherwise), is a better quality guitar than an Am Spcl, hands down. I actually found it difficult to distinguish my CP50s from my Am Std (2008), except that the CP had a bit better pups and the CP stayed in tune better, probably due to the locking tuners.

As a somewhat newer person here, I have to say that Donny' s attitude and delivery leave a LOT to be desired. A LOT!

That said, I agree as far as his points in the MIA versus MIM discussion.

I disagree, however, when the "quality" discussions go to MIA versus MIJ (except for the whole 'Merican jobs thing).

I don't appreciate the apparent need to belittle others...

This has certainly blossomed into an impassioned thread about the virtues of MIA vs. MIM Stratocasters. As far as I'm concerned, as long as you don't have things falling off the guitar, it feels good and can stay in tune it's a good guitar.

I looooove my MIM strat... I have played plenty of American strats in the store, and I think the SRV signature was an amazing guitar to play, but, after spending a couple years with my guitar, it just feels so right in my hands. I want it to be my main guitar for the rest of my life. I took the lacquer off so it has a natural finish, stained it to match the maple neck better (not perfect, but you definitely can't tell from stage) and put a clear coat over it, and put in CS '54 pickups. I think it sounds great. The sound is more about the amp anyways.

Picked it up for $225 used, spent about another $200 upgrading it and setting it up.

I bought a cheap MIM strat off CL with the intention of getting rid of the neck and reusing the body, After playing it I decided I liked the feel of the neck and put it on my USA Strat. I had an older strat neck that I never really cared for and I threw it on the MIM body. It is uncanny, almost everybody (with one or two exceptions) that plays it says they like the feel and tone of the MIM strat (which is all stock) over the USA strat. Too many people hear with their eyes. They make some great guitars in the Mexico Fender factory,

I have to admit that I got a kick out this thread. It reminds of the arguments from back in the day over whether Gibsons were better than cheap guitars....like Fenders.

I can't comment on the relative difference in quality between MIM and MIA because frankly I haven't had a chance to really check them out. But I can tell you a couple of things.

First, it's not the guitar that makes the guitarist. I have run into a lot of players with pricey gear, but without the skills to match. Conversely, one of the best players I have ever heard, who had his pick of the best guitars, chose to play a chipped blue green Epiphone.

There is no shame in playing a cheap guitar, no matter what some pros or semi-pros may say. If the instrument works for you, gives you the sound you want, has the feel you want, then it's a good guitar, period. If you can get that from a MIM, go for it. If only an MIA will do, go for that. But the time you spend justifying what you bought is time better spent honing your skills. Any real pro will tell you that, because many have said those very words to me.

No one ever booed me because they didn't like my guitar... 'nuff said.

Well said JmiJ, I saw a great band one night at the local honky tonk, a nationally touring band that will never become famous but the type of band in the trenches playing 5 nights a week in 3 different cities. I was sitting quite a ways from the stage and I could see this guy was playing a red strat and getting some great sounds out of it, during one of the breaks I chatted with him and commented on how good his strat sounded, he laughed and asked if I wanted to check it out, turns out it was a Squier, he bought it that day for $100 at a local pawn shop to replace his other rig that was stolen. People forget that not too long ago a cheap guitar meant a cheap guitar (plywood bodies, tuners that wouldn't keep a guitar in tune for more than a few chords) nowadays you can check out CL in any city and find something playable for a few hundred bucks. Don't get me wrong I love my entirely stock Gibson LPs USA Strats etc, but to take a cheaper MIM Strat or Tele and mod it and make it yours is half the fun of it. I love seeing guitarists get great tone out of something others look down there nose at.

Yeah I paid a hundred bucks to a church guy for it seriously, he only drove it on sundays. I fixed a bunch of his guitars. I have no problem buying an import as long as its used. That was just a home practice amp anyway. I sold it for $500 bought my Marshall 4x12 made in England maybe you heard of those?

I play Fender American Specials and Highway 1 I get them used and new so cheap and they are the best guitar Fender makes in my opinion.

Even my Les Paul Classics are affordable.

You can good status quo gear at the right price if you TRY. Right?

Unless one is an indigenous American, your/our ancestors came from some other country, so... ;)
