+1 I totally understand the attraction guys have to vintage gear. But when I get on stage, give me locking tuners, 12" radius fb, string saver saddles, a 3 ply pickguard that isn't warped, I could care less how many screws hold it in place. :D

I really started hitting the pawnshops really hard in about 2008. I was on the hunt for a used bass to have in my studio. The stars aligned and I found a '74 Fender Jazz bass for $64.64 out the door. This got me in full throttle pawnshop hunt mode. Since then my mission was to hit all the regular pawnshops in a 75 mile radius on a VERY regular basis and get to know the owners or managers .The running around doesn't cost me dime since I'm an outside salesman and hit the shops during my sales routes This has paid off in spades since 2008. My mission was to hunt down as many older vintage guitar, basses, amps, pedals as could. I figured I'd save a boatload of money and get to acquire some older gear I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. Here's what I've picked up starting with the '74 Jazz (This is ONLY the vintage stuff I've picked up)

'74 Fender Sunburst Jazz Bass $64.64 Out The Door
'78 Fender Walnut P-Bass w/ OHSC $250 OTD
'79 Fender Black P-Bass $180 OTD
'79 Fender Blonde P-Bass w/ OHSC $250 OTD
'89 Fender Silver Metallic "Boner" Jazz Bass w/ OHSC $315 OTD
'90 Fender MIJ Vintage White '57 RI P-Bass $125 OTD
'77 Gibson Wine Les Paul Deluxe w/ OHSC $750 OTD
'70 Gibson Cherry ES-335 $165 (Bartered for guitar)

Since I've found all this gear so cheap, I don't worry at all what the market does. I guess if we go into the worst depression of all time, then all the guitars will be used for firewood.

I've always seen it as a crap shoot. Some are great and some are duds. I played a '70 Strat that was pretty uninspiring. One of the very best Strats I've ever played is my Candy Green 2000 Clapton Strat w/ Lace Sensors. It was my "goto" guitar for several years. Then I got my '04 50th Anniversary Am. Series. The best Tele I've ever played is my home built Allpart Tele.

Weird how things change. When I was a young kid playing, the mid 80's, Im going to be 40 this year. You couldn't give away a Strat from the mid 70's to 85. Whenever the American Standard was introduced it was considered to be quality-wise the modern day pre-CBS. Not that they didn't hang on the shelves for awhile. Back then it was all humbuckers, locking nuts, Floyd Roses and glow in the dark colors.

I passed on a lot of post CBS guitars for 150-200 bucks. I was that kid, who everybody made fun of using a 3 single coil Strat trying to play Hendrix when everyone else was buying Kramers and playing Winger songs. Oh the glory days, 700 dollar LPs and 425 for a brand new MIA Standard Strat.

I was the kid playing a MIJ Tele Custom and pretending to be Andy Summers. No hair metal for me. I do remember those days well. Back then, you couldn't give me a '70s era Strat, but now that I've played a few...

I remember in '87 when the Strat Plus first came out. I was so impressed. I ended up buying a used one in '93. By the way, I was kid living in York, PA in '87 - '89 when KIX made the big time.

I am a proud owner of three '70s Strats. Nothing wrong with them and I love 'em as much as my even older Strats.

Folks can have their hate. I will have the guitars, thank you.
