I bought the neck and body in the 90's but could not find out what model the body is. The guy I got the body from gigged with it for years and said he thought it was a Japan Strat. The tremolo is stamped with the fender logo, it has a toggle switch and one of the knobs kind of clicks in about half way turned. Thanks for any info you can send my way. I might sell it, but would like more info on it so not to rip anyone or myself off.

It looks like a variant of the Contempory Strat.

It's a MIJ contemporary body with a American Standard neck. The body is probably a few years older than the neck. Probably 85-87 and the neck looks like an 89.

Is that odd humbucker stock? I don't recall ever seeing one like that.

Yeah, some had pickups like that. Usually the ones that were HH configurations.

Thanks for the info. I think I will keep it. I'm left handed so it's strung left handed. The guy I bought the body from son trashed the neck. I love that I found this site.

I found more info on this strat.
Fender's Contemporary line consisted of the Deluxe, which offered the top of the line System III tremolo and was equipped with either dual Schaller humbuckers or an HSS with a Schaller humbucker and two USA single coils. A lesser model Deluxe was offered only with HSS and outfitted with the mid-line System II tremolo without fine tuners, using knife-edge pivot system. This model didn't use the Schaller humbucker but a standard Fender humbucker mounted to a pickup ring. Rounding out the series were the "regular" Contemporary Stratocasters: an HH model and single humbucker model, which were the only ones in the series built without pickguard, which I attribute to retailer's being able to compare it to a Kramer Baretta/Imperial and since it was built sans pickguard, the output jack was side-mounted. The Contemporary Strat featured the System I tremolo which pivoted on two studs like a modern day tremolo, and featured both a standard nut PLUS a locking nut located on the headstock. The most common model in the "regular" contemporaries was an SSS model with identical specs to the HH and H models above, including the System I, but Fender opted to call it the "Standard Stratocaster" (sans "Contemporary") since Fender wasn't building any other Standards at the time. It rightfully should have been part of the Contemporary series since, other than the pickguard and SSS configuration, it was identical to the single humbucker Contemporary. These "Standard Strat" models are, by far, the most common due primarily to considerably lower cost.

Features of high end 27-5700 model include: alder body, bolt-on maple neck, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay, blackface headstock, System III locking vibrato, black pickguard, Schaller humbucker with 2/1 screw attachment that's screwed directly into the body, single volume and TBX control, 5-way switch plus mini-switch for 7 tone settings, and chrome hardware. The System III was really a rather ingenious piece of engineering. First off, it uses a special tremolo arm with the short shaft being square and the tip screws off to reveal an Allen wrench. The reason for this is that, adjacent to the strap pin is an Allen socket, which raises/lowers the bridge, making minor adjustments a breeze. The square shaft was used as it operated a locking mechanism in the tremolo to convert it from tremolo to fixed bridge with just a 1/4 turn of the bar. Both of these are very practical features and I'm surprised that Fender never pursued the technology in any models that followed. This guitar plays superbly and sounds great. The Schaller humbucker is the same model used in the Esprit/Flame models and one of my favorite pickups of all time. It is capable of producing great Strat tones plus a warmer, fatter tone via the Schaller.

Ooh, I know this is swearing in the church, and that there can't possibly be anything good from the end of the CBS era, but those do actually look stylish with the black headstock and less prominent socket.
What's that Japanese word for simplistic elegance again? Kanso?

If there was a model without 20 different switch combos and bridges and nuts you need an engineering degree to operate, i could see myself playing one of those.

I'll have to disagree with ya arth1. Having been involved in the total stopping of U.S. production in 81/82 for re-institution of quality standards from raw wood to the final guitar line, there was some good quality stuff leaving the CBS Fender factory in Fullerton from 82-84. Some of the newer designs weren't always great and also didn't always catch on, but at least they were also into trying to innovate again.
I inspected many many MIJ guitars and saw a definite learning curve taking place. By the time 50's and 60's Strats came along from Japan around sometime near Christmas of 87, they were producing some outstanding stuff, and have since.
Nonetheless, the Contemporary models (pictured)were pretty decent guitars for the most part.
Cheers,
rob

I take your word for it - you should know :D
When I see one for sale in the area, I'll check it out, because I like the clean looks and flatter fretboard.

Fender doesn't have an awful lot of guitars with humbuckers, and it might tide me over until the GAS tells me to get a Shishkov chambered humbucker Esquire...

I admit that I really like the 12" radius necks......the old Master series Espirits etc. (later became Robben Fords) were awesome guitars.

Fender made a USA Contemporary Stratocaster in 1995 which was a totally different animal compared to the mid-1980s Japanese originals.

Image

This model was crafted by former Senior Master Builder John Suhr (founder and actual CEO of JS Technologies Inc) and sported two Texas Special single-coils paired with a Seymour Duncan '59 Trembucker. Other features included a bookmatched maple top, 4-ply pearloid pickguard, master volume/tone controls, a maple neck with rosewood or maple fretboard and a Fender Deluxe Locking Tremolo Assembly with LSR Roller Nut and Schaller locking tuners.

The bridge looks like Floyd Rose licensed locking tremolo. It's the same bridge found on the Ultra Strat.
