I just purchased a fender squire bullet strat and the whammy bar will not work/go down. Any suggestions as to what to do

Buy new or second hand ?
Are you sure it is the right one , Fender make so many products ? Scew type or plug in ?

Well, it seems that they gave you the wrong bar for the guitar.
Not all trems are alike.

That's the best but what can we / you do ? It fit , not problem . It not fit , it is you or it is the wrong tremolo arm :(

When you say will not work/go down

Do you mean the actual arm will not screw /push into the trem block OR do you mean you can't press down on the bar to make it whammy

If the first one, wrong size arm
If the second, take off backplate and see if the springs are put on correctly

The only other thing I've ever seen stopping the whammy bar being pushed down, was in a second hand shop , an old strat copy where the bridge screws were tightened down completely , so the bridge couldn't move at all

The vibrato bar is often blocked on purpose by end users, to get better sustain and to keep the tuning better.
Several methods are used:
- Screwing down the bridge.
- A trem blocker, usually a piece of wood inside the cavity.
- A tremol-no or similar device where you can turn on and off blocking the vibrato bar.
