I bought this in 1983. It has all the trappings of a 1982 Dan Smith Strat, except the tuners. I read where the tuners of a true Dan Smith from 1982 have the Fender F logo on the back. This one has the word Fender printed out in full. But the era is correct and everything else seems period correct. Opinions? TIA.

You need to show more details such as headstock (front) ...

Dan Smith era was tough for Fender. They tried to save on parts, paint and everything else .. thus the 2 knob Strats, etc. Mine even has a single ply pick-guard with 8 screws only.

This Dan Smith looks legit to me however I've never seen one with those tuners. If you bought it new from a dealer you should have no doubts. :D

What you have is most definitely a Dan Smith Stratocaster. The DS Strats have the smaller headstock with the old larger headstock decal.

The two knob jobs while they were produced during the Dan Smith era are not what is considered "Dan Smith Strats".

Yours is a true Dan Smith and in real good shape it appears. Enjoy it!

I also agree - it seems there are some out there that had the Fender/Schaller sealed tuners instead of the "F" tuners. I suspect it happened pretty late in the run of 1982 "Standard" Strats (commonly known as the "Smith" Strat). If you check your neck and body dates I wouldn't be surprised if this one is from very late in 1982 or even early in 1983 from before they transitioned to the "revised" Standard Strat model (the 2-knob version).

Thanks all. I kinda thought it was (is) but the tuners didn't make sense to me. Next time I re-string it I'll pull the neck and see what date is stamped on it. I didn't even know until recently there was anything special about this guitar. I purchased it new from a dealer, I really think it was 1983 but I'm not totally sure of that. I just knew I wanted a real Strat. It's been my main player since I got it. I got rid of a Gibson SG junior to get this. Now I wish I had that back. In addition to this. Oh well.

I have seen many DS's -- beautiful instruments for sure. My DS is my main player for the last 20 years; its got a tiniest and fastest neck I ever played, let alone its sonic characteristics. Many other guitars come and go, this one is to stay .. :D .. for good.
