I had a mustang 1 and I just could not get a good sound from it. My Fender FM25 DSP is a much better sounding amp than the Mustang. I finally pick up a VOX AC 4 Tube amp. 4 watts and a 10" speaker. I use this amp with my BOSS Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb-Amp pedal and it's like I have a mini-Deluxe Reverb amp. Perfect for the livingroom Blues jam. I paid $150 bucks out the door. A 10' Fender custom shop guitar cable was included also.

My Fender FM-25DSP has a nice clean sound and a nice reverb. I can't remember how much I paid for it new but it was less than $160.00. The built in effects sound good too.

Yeah, I took the Mustang back and traded up for a Champion 40. It's got more power (40 watts vs. 20), it's got a dedicated "clean" channel and a second channel for various effects, and to me it looks a lot nicer than the Mustang. I like the sound from it much better than I did the Mustang. Eventually I'll get me a nice tube amp, but for now, this is everything I need.

Congratulations on your new Strat!

Regarding your amplifier question:
I've had a number amps over the years including the 80's red knob version of the Twin Reverb simply called "The Twin" --which was a great amp but I got tired of lugging it around. Then there was the Mesa Simul-Class 90 watt stereo power amp mated to the Tri-Axis preamp and two 2 X 12 cabinets-- I got really tired of lugging that around.

However in your case you could get a really good clean sound with two Champion 600's fed by a stereo reverb unit-- I have the Boss RV-5 pedal--and spaced apart to get a full ambient sound. I've also seen vids where people have powered external (impedance matched) cabinets with these little amps by going directly out of the speaker jacks. I used a mod kit sold by youtube user "alnicomagnet" to get rid of the hum and add a Standby switch to both of them. I also modded the tone on one of them with that kit.

I also have that Vox AC4TV amp, mentioned in an earlier post, which is also nice. It is a bit better for overdriven tones.

Have fun experimenting!!

The Champion is not bad at all for being a solid state. Honest sound on the clean channel, and being open-back, less "punchy" than the Mustang. Combined with the bigger speaker element, you should indeed have a much nicer and less boxy clean sound now.

It should last you until A.A.S. inevitably forces you to buy a tube amp.
