I bought a Stratocaster Affinity and was looking online how to properly set this guitar up ( mind you this is my first guitar ) I watched a video and the guy was demonstrating with a Vintage-Style Synchronized Tremolo system. Now mine looks almost the same as his but it's not. His had a cut out right above the hole for the Tremolo arm and mine doesn't ( I don't know if that's because I have an Affinity series or because mine is left handed )

Anyways he said the Tremolo system should be 1/8 on an inch above the body of the guitar, which mine is flush. Again I don't know if it's like that because of the series of the guitar or if it just wasn't set up correctly ( if at all at Guitar Center ) I just want to know if I can follow his directions even tho I have an Affinity series? I'm sorry if this is a really dumb question ( again first guitar ) just want to make sure I'm doing things correctly.

Thank you in advance.

Since this is your 1st guitar, I would recommend taking it to be set up by a knowledgeable tech,
you can learn how to but it's best to get it done by a tech the first time..
especially since it is an Affinity....

You can watch the video if you have the stamina for those 44+ minutes - I didn't 8)
And who the heck is Kip Bratwurst, anyway (no offence)..?

Here's a link to Stratocaster Setup Guide
Before you start, record the setup you have now [measure relief & string heigths, take a (phone) pic of how your bridge saddles are and how the tremolo springs look, etc.]
Then think what you want to change - remembering that in a Strat, everything affects something else. (E.g. you want to raise the bridge -> loosening the trem springs increases the action -> adjusting this may affect intonation...)
And then, following the order given in the link, change what you need to change.

Don't panic, we were all beginners once. And if all else fails, then take it to a good pro.

Make sure that you know what each thing is supposed to do before you set about changing it. If you don't plan on using the tremolo function then keep the bridge flat, it's fine.

Have fun!!

You can use the instructions but there are little details that only come with time and doing this a few times...
Setting up is crucial and understanding the concept thoroughly is key ( no puns intended ) for a guitar to be playable.... As it should...

Yeah I'm not going to be using the tremolo at all, I think I should have bought a Tele. So I won't mess with the bridge at all. Thank you for your help.

And thank you to everyone else that has posted.

Two very different sounding guitars, a Stratocaster is much more versatile than the Telecaster, they really are very separate, not only in feel but sound...
The Tele's classic twang can be approximated with the Stratocaster but the Stratocaster's range due to 3 pickups, trem. and springs just give it a unique sound...

Best is to have both as trying to mimic one with the other is just not possible...
