...And the Squier is which series..?

Anyway, you're asking a question only you can answer.
Some things to ponder:
Are you unsatisfied with the Squier in any way?
Do you need the Fender logo to give you confidence?
Will holding a *real* Fender make you play more, and thus make you a better player?

Unless there is really something wrong with the Squier, I vote for just keeping it. The fact you need to ask us indicates to me that you should wait until YOU know what your next guitar should be. Once you get some more guitar chops under your belt, what your next git should be will be PAINFULLY clear. Squiers are not bad guitars at all.

Also, the fact that the MIM Strat is pretty old and has been altered may be a indication of some problems that are not evident to your "newby" eyes.

thanks for the replies. I think you are right. I need to keep what i have and play for a while and let my tastes develop. I think I will spend any money on a newer amp to enjoy the music i am putting out and continue learning.

I understand you too well. I keep thinking that I should replace my faker with a Fender Strat. Like it will make me better at playing or get me to play more.

Thing is, it's a Strat copy, and a pretty good one. I've set it up so that it plays and sounds great. My nonsense thinking goes in circles. I need a Fender. Too expensive for my level of play. Let's buy a Fender neck and make it into the real thing. But a neck costs about the same as a Squier, so let's get that! No, it's not the real thing. So I need a Fender Strat. But it's too expensive for my level of playing... ad infinitum.

Then I go online looking for an Epi Les Paul.

But when I pick up my not-quite-a-Strat, it plays great and I love it.

I just bought an American Standard Strat yesterday. And I'm still in the process of learning chords and scales. So to say that I'm a beginner is an understatement. I realize that an American Strat is much more guitar than I "need" and that it's not going to offer anything in terms of building my skills that, say, a Squier would not. That said, these instruments are, at least to me, works of art, and I derive a great deal of satisfaction in knowing that I own one of the most highly regarded guitars on the market. And who knows - maybe the constant thought that I dropped 1200 bucks on this thing will motivate me to worker all the harder to get better! ;-)
