For the past year, I have wanted another '70s era Strat for my collection, but didn't have the money for one. The '70s era Strats have been picking up in value over the past several years, and in the future, I suspect about five - tens years, even they will begin to be outside the price range of the average person who might only have about $2K to spend on a vintage Fender.

After selling two Strats and saving some money, I was able to purchase a 1976 Strat (birthday 5th week of January, 1976, on a Wednesday). Color: aged blonde with some wear down to the wood. Neck: Maple.

The modifications; because you know there have been some:
Neck radius was altered to 12"
Strap buttons have been changed
The nut was replaced

The good:
Everything else is original.

The pickups sound great; the Neck pocket is tight, the saddles are in good shape, and all the electronics are sound. Some of you will notice that the pickguard is black and the pickup covers and knobs are white, which might appear to not be period correct, but believe it our not I have seen lots of Strats from '76 with this configuration. By '77 all guards and plastic should be black, but in '76 Fender was still mix and matching parts. Got to get rid of the old stuff first.

Here is a link some photos I took.

Congrats on the new acquisition....looking forward to seeing the pictures. I have a natural/maple finish from just before then and I have really enjoyed it over the years. I remember at the time seeing models being shown in all combinations of black and white plastics. That period sometimes has a bad reputation for fit and function...but many of the instruments made then are just fine and it seems like you are happy with yours.

The obvious question to be asked...just how heavy it it?

Cheers.

I like the '79 better, but right now that guitar is being rebuilt from thebody up. The rosewood needs to be replaced and the body split down the seam. When everything is said and done, it will be even better than when I dropped it off to my local luthier, Phil Jacoby, at Philtone guitars.

Except for that black pickguard, I love the looks of it.

How are the frets? I hope it plays and sounds good.

If you take it apart, be sure to make note of the numbers and codes you find.

Actually, I really dig the black and white tux look. Even though the Strat looks like a yellowing white guitar, it's really blonde and reminds me of an old '50s Tele.

I've already looked under the hoods and as crazy as it sounds, this guitar has not been molested in the electronics department. I was so shocked. Many Strats from this period have been monkeyed with some way.
