Cost a lot more than that Squier though.

I'm sure I could get a few Squiers for that one. So... mind starts crunching... buy Squier... buy real Fender maple neck with prettier headstock... buy TexMex pickups... hope for a thunderstorm...

Would that still be a Squier?

I can believe it... Gibson has always been the snobbery-elitists of the electric guitar industry despite producing a mediocre instrument! (IMNSHO!) 8)

Harley Davidson no longer allows any dealership to sell any other brand of motorcycle IN THE SAME BUILDING as the Harleys! If the dealership deals in any other brand... they have to have a separate non-connected structure for the other motorcycles. (Most likely so customers can't see just how incredibly overpriced Harley is compared to its competition!) Insane!

I know that in australia that gibsons are imported through AMI

AMI

So if you wanna buy a new gibbo any time of the year in Aus you're going through those guys, and you can see what their "RRP" is (UUURRRRGGGGHHH). Still a decent music store will knock off some dosh from that.

Some still do big orders in direct, like container loads, but its less and less now a days

Yeah you got told a BS story because the vendor couldn't afford all franchises or didnt want both franchises.
I can tell you for sure that an authorized dealership is high dollar for any brand.
Up here in our store we are trying to get Fender and its a big investment for smaller stores.
We carry every product they have but guitars and amps.
I cant remember the price but its thousands to start. We all talked about chipping in and ordering new American Strats just to buy into the dealership.
Gibson is no different its a big cost upfront with an agreement to maintain the contract.
Smaller stores cant keep up and chain stores are driving that cost up now.

Its really not the big brands they just dont have any private store packages anymore.
With the big chains filling wharehouses now days its all Gibson a Fender can do to keep up with mass orders.
Its just like Walmart and Blockbuster came in and dusted all the 5 and dimes and video stores. At least we got to watch Blockbuster bite it. They really deserved that lol.
But thats what America is all about Free Enterprise and if you can squash the other guy its good untill your a monopoly.
Usually its written in the stars when your a monopoly your days are numbered.
