So after over a year of deciding which pickup I wanted and researching whether or not I needed a humbucker or trembucker Seymour Duncan Custom for my MIA Deluxe HSS Strat, I finally chose and ordered the trembucker version (TB-5).

After endless reading through the forum to hear peoples experience with installing one of these I decided I'd be better off ordering a custom pickguard, one which had a single mounting screw hole either side of the trembucker routing. I use the word custom loosely as when it arrived the trembucker was still too wide to fit the routing, even though I specifically asked WD Music to make it wide enough for me. The bobbins just about fit through but the coil winding and tape around the magnet did not.

Another thing I noticed about this pickguard was how much closer the trembucker routing was to the bridge compared to the original. The gap was only 7mm compared to 14mm. Had the pickup fit and I took the old pickguard off, I doubt I would have been able to get the new on on anyway as the body routing probably wouldn't align. Even if I managed to get the new pickup and pickguard in, I doubt I would have been happy knowing that the tone may be affected due to the proximity to the bridge.

I'll be sending this pickguard back and will no doubt have to wait another 4 weeks for the new one to be made.

I guess the word of warning is make sure you have plenty of space for the Seymour Duncan trembucker as they are quite a bit wider than their humbucker counterparts. Warmoth offer the Fat Trembucker pickguard routing option which has the correct radius if you're going for one without a cover, I wish I had gone with these guys the first time around...

Finally, in terms of the pole pieces lining up, I can see very little difference compared with the stock Atomic humbucker.

I just fit 2 Seymour Duncan JB trembuckers in 2 pickguards the Warmoth and the Fender Lonestar.
They both fit it was a little tight but it works. I just rewraped tape and moved wires on on side out of way.
Then in was a tilt thing one side in first
If you just want a warmoth pickguard they dont shield the back fyi.
But they make really nice ones.

Water under the bridge now, but unless you wanted a different color pickguard there was also another option. Since you say you had to order the Duncan, you could have ordered it with a 3-screw baseplate. It would have been less expensive than a custom pickguard (even less expensive than a standard guard).

I'm surprised no one sells a 3-screw adapter. An inch long piece of brass 1/4" bar stock with 3 holes drilled in it and the two outer holes tapped, plus a short screw for attaching it to the pickup. The market might not be huge but the manufacturing cost would be minimal.

Hi Stokley: that's a shame, because I've had good service from WD Music's custom pickguard service.

However, take a look at this page:

http://www.warmoth.com/Pickguard/StratPickguard.aspx

You will notice that if you click on different pickup options the pickguard picture to the right changes accordingly. Try toggling between the fat trembucker and fat humbucker options. You will see that the cavity for the pickup is very slightly wider for the trembucker. Presumably that means Warmoth understand the difference between the two and will supply you with what you need.

I can't speak for the distance between the pickup and the bridge, but I know a couple of people who have used Warmoth's custom pickguards a lot, including with humbuckers on Strats, and they report very good experiences. So hopefully you'll get where you want to go.

Cheers - C

I really liked mine and yeah they offer the trembucker cut.
Warmoth is prob the best if you dont mind shielding it yourself or dont want shielding.
Im thinking of going dual humbucker on my American Deluxe I installed a floyd on.

This is the one I like
