I'm new to guitars, and looking to upgrade beyond the new Squire I have. I found what could be a good craigslist deal. They are pretty upfront in the ad.

It's described as "American Deluxe it has a Squire neck on it, and I bought it that way. A local guitar shop owner who does repairs has worked on this one, and verified it is an American Deluxe body. The original neck was broken after falling from its display at Guitar Center. ...bought it and placed the Squire neck on it and has used it as a practice rig, and in some local gigs."

Is there a way I could I verify this? Is there a S/N somewhere other than the headstock? If it's true, I think it's a good deal, US for MIM money. I would think I could always find a period correct neck later.

Thanks in advance, Chris

No other serial #.

There will be date(s) in the Body Cavity, but those are the date(s) for Body production, not Assembly Date of the Guitar.

You may be able to have a Fender Auth. Serv. Cntr. get a replacement neck if there's enough corroborating evidence that the orig. neck broke.

It's an involved procedure w/ the Serv. Cntr. required to submit photos to Fender for authentication.

Even then, I believe that any SN # will be a replacement number.

If this is really important to you, one thing to consider is cost.

By the time you're done, you'll likely end up paying more than what simply buying a New American Deluxe would cost... and you'd still have that nasty little * hovering over the guitar.

If this is unimportant, you can always buy a used MIA neck and put it on.

cheers!

^^ I agree, replacing the neck will bring the guitar back to norm, even though I have used Squier necks for build projects, I would only replace a Squier neck on a Squier.....

You can get a genuine Fender neck, ready to mount to body, predrilled for Deluxe tuners for about $200 from Fender....
This would be the quickest route to legitimacy....

This would be an MIM neck, the MIA's are up in the $400 range... 8)

I can't imagine anyone putting a Squier neck on an American Deluxe Strat. I would steer clear of it!

If you are looking to graduate from your Squier... find yourself a nice MIM Deluxe or look at the American Specials. Fantastic instruments for under $1000.

Thanks for putting things into perspective for me. It would be silly to spend $350 for someone else's frankenstrat, then double that for a correct US neck, plus getting rid of the diamond plate pick guard and whatever else turns up that I don't like. Just save myself a lot of time, effort, and money and just buy a used American Standard.

It's so easy to get all wrapped up in a potential project and upgrades etc. thank you, seriously.

For future consideration, bear in mind that a Fender factory built replacement neck, regardless of source, still dulls the patina of the legitimacy of the original. It's no longer 'stock', but you can honestly represent it as Fender. What you presently have is a Fender/Squier hybrid.

I thought Squier necks were wider? I know for a fact on bass you cant swap necks about 1/4 inch wider

Squier necks are interchangeable with MIM necks, depending on the model they are thinner.
I posted a couple threads on building guitars some time back, the first was specifically targeted to a budget minded refinish / rebuild of a standard body with a Squier neck fitted as a replacement...

53magnatone, do you have a link to the budget-built thread? Sounds interesting.

Thoughts on AllParts stuff would be appreciated as well. A dealer in Amsterdam, NL is advertising necks and bodies for a reasonable price and I'm wondering if I should custom build my dream Strat.

There are also plenty of people parting out deluxes on ebay.
You can find an American Deluxe neck there it usually runs about $500
