Does anyone know why Fender and Mark Knopfler's relationship fell apart and why Fender no longer produces the Mark Knopfler strat? I'd like to buy one if anyone knows where I can find a new or mint condition MK strat. Does anyone know if Knopfler and Fender might make up and Fender begin to sell this strat again? Thanks!

Maybe because the guitar that Knopfler was known to play wasn't actually a Fender Strat? :?:

Yeah, that can be a definite buzz kill ...

His use of a Pensa-Suhr on the classic Dire Straits stuff didn't bother Fender when they issued his signature Strat. Regardless of who actually made the Strats he played, those songs helped sell a lot of Fenders.

Fender didn't care that SRV's "Lenny" had an aftermarket Japanese neck, Gibson Posi-Lok strap buttons, and aftermarket saddles and nuts when they copied all those features for the Tribute model.

It's all about sales expectations and sales performance. Mark Knopfler and Bonnie Raitt don't have the sales clout they used to, and even at their peaks those models were a relatively small niche market. And other than skinny necks, those models didn't really offer particularly unique features -- you can get those sounds from Strats that have more popular nut widths and neck shapes. Yngwie and Blackmore don't have the clout they used to either, but scalloped boards have a bigger market than tiny nut widths.

Knopfler did play a red Strat..... I doubt it was on the instrument.
More than likely it was about business....

There are forum members who own that guitar and have nothing but raves for them. Schecter, I believe, built the Strat Knopfler used. Business, I expect, is the likely reason for the discontinuance.

I own one and it's one beautiful looking and playing guitar. I've already had some offers if I ever consider selling.

Nice array. There's a vintage guitar dealer in Weston FL who has a Rickie Capri 330 for sale if you've ever given that a thought.

Cookieman, nice array, indeed. Whats the story on the green Strat?
Sorry, per subject, Mark Knopfler is a business man, I guess. No matter the make of his Strat, it certainly exhaults the sound of a Fender. Nothing else is like that sound. Didnt Dire Straights first LP have an outline, or drawing of a Strat on the record? The intent was correct, I reckon.

Although Knopfler is associated mostly with the Pensa Suhr Strat-like guitars and the Schecter Strats, he most certainly did play and still does Fender Stratocasters.....

His early days of Dire Straits and before were predominantly on Fender's Startocaster... Fender would not have a MK model unless that was true....
But to be fair, Knopfler utilizes a varied quiver of guitars, from Gibsons to Gretsch's to National to Ramirez and the aforementioned to deliver a palette of sounds.....

Like many who reached prominence in the late 70's, early 80's, quality Stratocasters were either difficult to find or just to personal to bring on tour and risk being stolen...
Shecter was the Go-To at the time for a Strat-simile that would perform admirably on the road but not be irreplaceable. The Pensa-Suhr's were the luxury replacement and we the listeners are just really fortunate to have had such a great output of music over the years....

Not many guitarists can be equally at home playing with Emmylou Harris, Chet Atkins, composing musical scores, or just rocking us with a Bebop or Rockabilly or Country Blues tune then seamlessly merge into "Money For Nothing "......

I'm surely hopeful that the Knopfler Strat will eventually return, but life does Move On....
