I am in the market to add a maple neck strat to the family and this one came up and I am going to play it tomorrow.

With that being said even though playbility and tone are the most important thing...but I want to know what I am heading into as well.

It appears the tuning keys have been changed at a minimum. The bridge 2 pt trem doesn't seem to match what appears to be a 1954 reissue neck. Also the color (Torino Red?) would not seem to match a vintage reissue. Personal opinion...I think someone slapped the 40th anniversary neckplate and decal on the headstock of another guitar. Although price wise it would be consistent with an American strat of that vintage so not worried about the 40th anniversary thing.

I know there are some savy Fender historians out there and looking for some other eyes on this one for opinions.

Sure looks to be a 40th Anniversary American Standard Stratocaster to me! Tuners may have been changed, but the color, the two point bridge, and 40th badge on headstock are all just as they should be.

From other pics I have seen of the 94 strats, the seial number is on the front of the head stock under the fender logo. This it seems to be on the back.

Just to add every American Standard Strat built during 1994 had that 40th Anniversary neck plate and the 40th Anniversary medallion on the headstock face. This does look like an American Standard with changed tuners.

Regarding the headstock decal - I just can't remember when Fender changed American Standards to the vintage style decal and moved the serial number to the back of the headstock. For some reason I was thinking that happened in 1995 but I suppose it could have been at the end of 1994.

What is the serial number on this guitar?

Ahhh more info...

As the serial number was unreadable in the photos I asked for it in email and just received it. it is N8xxxxxx indicating a 1998-1999. The pics also seem to be a closer match to a 98 in terms of the decals.

Whilst the guitar may be a standard there is something amiss
40th celebration was around 94.
Someone may have liked the badge and stuck it on a 98 or possibly parts assembled.
Ultimately it depends on price etc. :D

The price is my 2006 Gibson Special faded SG. If it is an ameican made fender, that plays well and is in good condition, i think the trade may be worth it...we shall see.

It turns out in person it was poorly maintained and in desperate need of some work...plus the tone and feel didn't do it for me. Oh well.
