That Tele's still hurtin' ain't it, Doc?

Many years ago, I found getting rid of the long-term girlfriend was the way to go, when space was pressing. Keep the instruments. That's the way I tell the story to myself, anyhow... :?

That Tele was a very different beast from the mainstream and I did not have enough information on it at the time. The '93 Clapton as well which, I believe, had a slightly sharper V-neck than the next generation, or even the CS they built for me based on that platform.

In this case, the Forum is has a knowledge base such that we intrinsically understand the design concepts behind the EJ and the JEM VII. The questioner demonstrates that he may yet not be ready for that level of refinement in terms of his taste in crossing over. (Just the neck profiles and radius' alone between these two guitars are day and night.) Were I he, I would spend some serious time auditioning those guitars if the price point is no object. I still hold closer to the earlier suggestion of whetting his electric chops with another MIM which, he obviously could pass down to his daughters, so each would have one, and move on from there.

So that told you, OP.

Agree with all of that. However, I would also add that careful auditioning of life-partners is equally vital. Late '90s I found myself parting company with an otherwise perfectly formed woman who however did not fully grasp the necessity of sharing a home with assorted guitars, basses, amplifiers, drum kits, recording equipment... I firmly contend that I was forced to let her go, she might tell you a different story.

Now I have a wife who positively encourages these little fripperies. She has her Imelda Marcos suite, I have my playroom. Playrooms... Last time I came home with another amplifier I bought a huge box of chocolates with the idea of sweetening my wife's mood to the purchase. She responded by reaching in her purse and pulling out tickets to a Joe Bonamassa gig that night.

Now, that's a woman who understands a man's needs...

I'm considering selling a Taylor to finance going electric with a new purchase. If I'm going to give up my baby it will have to be for something special. Can anyone provide a good comparison of an EJ strat vs. an Ibanez JEM 7V?

Thanks in advance

Notwithstanding the "Fender Rules" enthusiasm out there, the serious minded recognize that you're really comparing apples and oranges and likely two of the more sophisticated models in each of the lines. Both were built to the exacting specifications of unique players, each with their own individual approaches to tone.

I would suggest that you keep the Taylor and make a modest investment in another MIM Stratocaster if, judging by your first purchase, you seem to have an interest in this guitar which most of us are fanatical about at times.

Once you've adjusted your chops to that, you can consider several of the high end Fender options.

Ceri's advice comes, in part, from some of my own observations about letting things go. You come to regret and miss them. If one must not have too many guitars, don't part with those you've come to love.

Certainly not something as well done as a Taylor.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Doc.

I can second the opinion on the MIM Strat for two reasons. #1: In 1985 I traded a perfectly good, perfectly mint 1970 Strat (Clear coat finish, white pickguard, not a scratch on it) for a Marshall amp that I grew to hate within a couple of weeks. I have regretted selling that guitar ever since.
#2: Late last year I just had to have another Strat after I got back into playing again after taking a 10 year break. The MIM Standard was the one I could afford at the time, so, I played through a pile of them at G/C and bought the one that I liked best.
The MIM is put together and finished really well, and it plays like a Strat should straight out of the box. I kept it and stock up until 2 months ago when I could afford to do some upgrades to it, so I put a Callaham bridge block, some reproduction 50's style pickups in it, and a really good setup.
Now I have a really nice, easy to play Strat that didn't cost a fortune (about $500.00 total).
I've taken it to several local guitar stores and they agree it is spooky good at recreating a vintage Fender Strat sound.
Bottom line...Don't part with that Taylor, there are alternatives.

My dad has long since passed away but I have pleasant memories of him playing the boogie woogie piano on Sunday mornings. My sister was a bigger influence on my music... she was a 50's person and I was a 60's.
