I'm considering selling a Taylor to finance going electric with a new purchase. If I'm going to give up my baby it will have to be for something special. Can anyone provide a good comparison of an EJ strat vs. an Ibanez JEM 7V?

Thanks in advance

I can't tell you about the JEM, I've never been an Ibanez fan. They are really two different animals. Humbucker based versus single coil based. You'll have to decide what tone fits your style better. Even if both guitars were of equal quality you'd still have to make that decision.

I do own an EJ and as far as I'm concerned it's the finest production model strat ever made. Period.

So if you're looking for that perfect strat tone, get the EJ. If you're looking for a fatter/hotter, more LP kinda tone...get the JEM.

I'd say that it definitely depends on your intentions and sound goals. I wouldn't dare do Satriani or Vai on a Fender Strat unless I was very careful about the dives - and you can't pull up like a floating bridge. The sound choices are different as well between Fender and Ibanez (as noted). Similar to queries about which professional 3D application to buy (Maya, 3DSMax, LightWave, Cinema, XSI, ...), try each and decide from experience. Unfortunately, no one guitar is going to fill every style/niche/technique.

Although I have the Steve Vai JEM777, I actually like the sound/feel/playability of the Joe Satriani JS1000 better. Again, this is personal taste. Play each guitar in which you are interested on the same amp through the same settings and get the one that feels right for you. :)

the EJ will have its own unique soul and voice and it will be your responsibillity to pull it out of the guitar every time you pick it up, or your playing and sound will suffer.

the ibby will be neutral and perfect and easy to play so you pick the guitar that is more what you want.

I know we're at Fender here, not Taylor. But I just don't want you to lose that Taylor. There's miles of posts here where people say how much they regret selling a beautiful guitar.

Isn't there something else you could sell? A spare amp? The TV? The car? The kids?

Taylors are sweet guitars, guy...

Anyway. Buy the Strat. Let's be real, after all.

Ceri,

I have moments of clarity where I know I shouldn't do it and I probably won't. My two young daughters have caught the guitar fever from me and they are both asking for an electric. I've only played acoustic and have two acoustics - a 1995 Taylor 910C and a 2003 Godin Multiac Duet. I just purchased a 60th anniversary MIM that is for the kids but one guitar and two girls doesn't add up. My warped thinking is that the girls will probably never play the Taylor. The dreadnought body is quite large. If I can live without it I can get another electric. It would have to be something special for me to do that though. But, deep down, I know it's insanity. Selling the car is a good idea! Thanks for the input. I need to be brought down to reality occasionally.

I'm a big Satch fan - but I would encourage you to go with the Fender.

Of course...one of each would be way cool :) Hate to see you get rid of the Taylor though...

Oh, that hurts. I'm not going to make further tasteless remarks about selling the kids, but when parenthood comes between a man and his Taylor, well that's a dilemma an no mistake.

Quite seriously for a moment, you WILL regret losing that acoustic. Just hang on and wait for some fresh funds to become available, and then satisfy your's and your daughters' electric yearnings.

Sounds like you're bringing your girls up right, though. Good on ya. We've got some great dads on the forum at the moment, haven't we, guys?

Cheers

My dad's lame. He never compliments and always criticises my playing. Would like to see him try! He doesn't have a musical bone in his body!

Oh yeah...I've seen lot's of great posts about dad's encouraging their kids :D
It's so much fun to introduce the next generation to the guitar and then see them develop their own style.

Mine too! Trouble is, he does have a musical bone in his body, quite a few of 'em, actually. So he's not always wrong. Curses!

If you're waiting for the point in life where that stuff changes, stop waiting. It never gets better. That's just sons and fathers.

Sorry about the bandwagon - but my dad is cool. He and mom have always been encouraging with my music. They haven't always shared my taste and they endured many drums, saxophones, guitars and "garage bands" in my school days.

Notwithstanding the "Fender Rules" enthusiasm out there, the serious minded recognize that you're really comparing apples and oranges and likely two of the more sophisticated models in each of the lines. Both were built to the exacting specifications of unique players, each with their own individual approaches to tone.

I would suggest that you keep the Taylor and make a modest investment in another MIM Stratocaster if, judging by your first purchase, you seem to have an interest in this guitar which most of us are fanatical about at times.

Once you've adjusted your chops to that, you can consider several of the high end Fender options.

Ceri's advice comes, in part, from some of my own observations about letting things go. You come to regret and miss them. If one must not have too many guitars, don't part with those you've come to love.

Certainly not something as well done as a Taylor.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Doc.
