Well, I'm a fan of the chilis and I wanna get a smilar tone to John's.

I have a strat (MIM Standard) and a Crate Taxi amp, and a Behringer OD100. I can coax a little of his tones out. The amp is pretty dry but I like my guitar.

Anybody know how I can get some tone out of those? ( I wanna buy a fender super champ xd sometimes but itll take a while)

after months of searching for the same tone, i made a ton of conclusions:

1. you can't get the exact tone. he has a few different special tones that you can't get off one guitar. like.. from under the bridge to soul to squeeze to the zephyr song to dani cali.

2. but you CAN get a really close match which is great and satisfying.

3. stay away from vox amps, marshall solid states (their tube amps are extremely expensive), and actually every solid state amp. i had my heart set on the vox ac15 but it let me down so i had to pass on it.

4. don't get the superchamp XD. it's definitely a let down. i don't wanna sound too harsh but since i was trying to get the same sound you want i wouldn't buy the superchamp XD.

part II.

i really like his recent solo and distortion sounds, especially in dani california. so then i realized that the only way to get that was the boss DS-2 turbo distortion pedal. that made me decide to buy a single channel amp.

a few days later i ended up buying the fender pro jr. (blonde covering, i love it). ($300-400 USD)

you can get some AMAZING frusciante tones through it. what i like to do is take the bad monkey and give it about half gain, turn on the vox wah so you get even more highs. this is really the sweetest strat sound ever. i don't really mess around with the bridge pickup. so if you want to upgrade your neck pickup that would be good too.

but i might mention that i'm playing it with a '62 reissue SCN pickups. so gather what you can, i think you should get the idea.
