Hi everyone!, i know its just an aesthetic thing but i would like to know if theres any way to change the wallnut plug on my fender 40th anniversary to a bullet truss rod. Can i just take of the wall nut with a solder and screw the new truss road bullet in?

I've seen the spares on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Fender-Bullet-Tru ... rod+bullet

Is it possible? Does any one here ever did it? If so, could you please guide me?

Best regards!

It can be done, but it is not just plug and play...
I believe the bullet will be of a larger diameter, thus you'll need to completely remove the truss rod to enlarge the pocket. The walnut plug is glued in and heat will result in damaging the surrounding area. Dependent on what adhesive was used, it may also not have any effect...
Cosmetically, this isn't worthwhile, aesthetically it will not be a 70's style look since there are many other changes needed...

Finding a bullet truss rod neck will be easier.... Swapping and redrilling for the 4 screw/bolt neck body is the easiest and cleanest...

You might want to consider a bullet replacement neck, at least allparts used to make those. Thus you can easily revert the guitar to original...

Only an expert luthier can do this job.

Not recommended to DIY unless you decide to completely harm your guitar.

I agree with the responses, that is not a great idea.

The question is still... WHY ... :?: :?:

There won't be any gains to a bullet truss rod, very likely the thread dimensions are different from your existing nut....

I haven't looked but a Fender 70's neck should be available thru Fender....

(edit) Just looked at Fender's neck options, a 70's style neck doesn't even have the bullet truss rod....
Furthermore I believe the bullet truss rod was not only a different thread pattern / size but also a different mechanical style of truss rod.

Strictly for a cosmetic want, you may be better off just buying a preowned 70's re-issue...
Less headaches and costs involved...

If you don't want to get a whole new guitar, actually, I think your best solution is getting a RI or vintage neck that meets your visual requirements. Otherwise, as soon as you start mangling that truss rod, the value of your guitar will be cut in half. If you just get another neck, the value of your guitar will be intact (assuming you keep the old neck, which you should) ... plus you will have gained the value of the new 70s-style neck which will maintain its value of whatever you pay for it (for the most part, at least).

I put a bullet type truss rod nut on an MIM strat that I replaced a truss rod in. I bought the nut because it was all my local shop had in stock at the time. It was quite a while ago. If I recall correctly the treads were the same, but maybe not. I may have threaded the rod to accept the bullet nut. It does not show like it would on a neck that came with the bullet style. I had to grind it slightly so it would fit in the hole. Looking back, I should have just ordered the correct nut. It also takes a smaller size allen wrench.
So, in in short, it would be a waste of time to attempt this, because in the end you wouldn't even know it was there.
But if you just mean removing the plug that fills the hole there would be nothing to screw it onto.
