You can still get them, you'll just have to pay a boatload for a loaded pickguard taken from a JM strat on eBay.

If you choose to do a similar pickup, something with a low output should do well.

haha sorry, on second thought, my last post wasn't really helpful at all.

Maybe some CS 69 pickups would do the trick?

You can use your amps EQ to scoop the mids and get a similar tone. Most of a guitar players tone comes from his/her style, not equipment. Believe me, if you picked up Mayer's guitar and started to play you'd sound like you. Same thing vice versa. John could pick up your axe and he'd sound like himself and you'd be wondering how the hell he did that.

Yeah the amp has a lot to do with it. Set the bass a bid higher than the mids and treble, and combine the low output pickups with a cranked tube amp. You need to drive the sound from the amp, kinda like SRV.

Before I got my John Mayer Strat, I looked high and low for something like the big dippers. There is a guitar parts company "GFS", they claim that their GFS "Premium II" Alnico I97 II, Hand Bevelled Set produce the "John Mayer" sound. I never tried them but there are a couple ppl that I have jammed with that replaced their tele pu's with GFS pu's and love them...I considered them for my 60's Reverse Strat, but in the end went with the CS 69's

I got the Dimarzio Area '58 pickups and this mid frequency scoop/boost control:

It gets me pretty close and it's hum free.

Neat. That's a good solution.

I am not Mayer's guitar tech but, I believe he uses under-wound low output pickups. I know that the pickups in his number one black reliced 62 reissue are in fact not big dippers. In addition to these pickups I believe his Two Rock Reverb amp help his tone. I do agree about most of a tone in the players fingers though.

You may go through a whole lot of trouble and still not get the same tone. You'll need his amp, string gage, settings, hands, technique, money etc. His tone isn't original. Before you start bashing me, He's talented no doubt, but his tone is just like everyone else trying to get SRV's tone it's just a natural evolution. If I were going through all that trouble, I would create my own, original tone.

I would say in some cases very similar to SRV but not the same. Stevie played a half step down so that changes his tone obviously. Eb tunning has unique overtones. But yes the are damn similar at times. I think Mayer is still growing as a artist and finding his groove.
