What's been nagging me for some is that is it really possible to make lets say Basswood
strat body to sound like Alder body strat using Equalizer.

i have a good mij Basswood strat. Basswood is fat! but to me lacks a character which Alder body strats seem to have. using parametric EQ i can add or remove certain frequencies to emulate Alder tone but my question is can you really accurately emulate sound
of Alder on Basswood which is very similar to Alder tone wise apart from having more high mids to my ears or you can just mimic it .by saying mimic i mean tone in a wood and you can't really accurately simulate it using EQs etc...

the sound of an amplified electric comes down to the electronics., the frets, the nut, and the bridge, Electric guitars do not get their sound from the wood at all, you could take a strat neck, bridge and pickgaurd and strap them to s cinder block and get the same exact sound, Electric guitar tone wood is a myth, Acoustic guitars are another story, I know that there are plenty of people that will disagree, but they are wrong, the wood is not important to the sound, It comes down to the player and electronics, amplifier, pedals, and hardware used, Tone is in your fingers, the gear used, and the electronic circuiy and hardware of the guitar, the wood does not matter, Your guitar pickups are electro magnetic, wood is not a magnetic material so your pickups do not transmit the sound of wood,

yes the amp should be shut off if you want to hear a difference in tone with 2 strats made from different woods, since wood is not magnetic and all and the only time you will hear the difference is acoustically, otherwise amplified they will sound the same, there are reasons why some would think that 2 guitars of differnt woods would sound different, tone caps, pickup heighth, No 2 pickups are wound exactly the same and no 2 potentiometers are the exact same due to manufacturing tolerances, these factors will make people believe that two different woods sound different,This is basic electronics, Any difference you believe you hear is psychosomatic and can not be scientifically proven, it is always the elctronics, it is never the wood, it is always the difference in the overall circuit, the electric guitar tonewood myth is nothing more than marketing tactic to sell those too lazy to investigate and test this on their own, if you must beleive that paying more for a high dollar piece of wood makes your guitar a better instrument then by all means continue to believe the lies if it makes you feel better about throwing money away , all the so called tonewood in the world will make no difference in the sound of your guitar once it is running through amps and effects, If you care about facts do the research and tests yourself and learn the truth, if you can prove me wrong go for it, but I study electronics and guitars and I already know the truth, So good luck with that.

No sense wasting time explaining things to an eggspurt who doesn't have a clue about a resonant system.

hahaha too funny, a string will vibrate a certain amount of times at a certain tension, the resonance can only be heard acoustically, you can't change the fact that wood is not magnetic,

The structure too which the strings are attached will effect those oscillation. String vibration is manipulated by the opposite reaction, different materials and construction design react differently even if string length is the same. The string are oscillating against the points to which they are attached. Some may be more apparent then others but the waves the pickup is reacting to will differ.

This talk brings Nicola Tesla (not the forum member) to mind.

well my ambition is not in electronics. i wanted to know 'cos ppl who are good at electronics and good luthiers have different idea about what's more important wood or pickups and both sound convincing! i just like to dig in and play and tone is important to me so it was interesting hear what you had to say!

Sure, some parts of a guitar are "more important" than other parts ...certainly. The pups definitely have the greatest impact on the sound of a guitar. That doesn't mean that everything else is worthless, or has no affect on sound produced by the guitar. Each guitar is unique, and the sound produced by it is the sum of nearly all of the parts.

Do all basswood strats sound the same?
Do all alder strats sound the same?
Even assuming the same amp, strings, pickups, and age/use on the strings?

IMO no.

So do I think you could EQ a particular basswood strat to make it sound like a particular alder strat? Yes.

I believe the wood type within variation is greater than the wood type between variation.

What? You mean like this?
I suppose you think this contraption sounds exactly like any other Strat.
I suppose you don't notice how bright it is.
I suppose you don't notice that they stuffed a rag into the strings behind the saddles.
I suppose you don't notice that they never even mention the rag.
I don't suppose you notice how much sustain this contraption has.
I don't suppose you were able to surmise that the rag was likely put there to reduce sustain and possibly muffle the tone somewhat to make it sound more like a normal electric guitar because the added clarity and harmonics provided by the cinder block makes it sound so very, very different.

You might want to check your so called facts before you try to speak with authority about things you clearly know nothing about.
Many have come before and tried to use this video to prove that construction materials are irrelevant to tone but the argument does not stand up under scrutiny.
All it proves is that you can make a guitar out of anything and it will still make sound.
It does not prove the materials used will have no affect on that sound.
Quite the opposite, it proves materials do matter.
