I have a '79 Gibson SG Standard with a great fretboard that always made me think that I had a deep love affair with Rosewood .... However, in recent years, I came to find -- after decades playing it -- that the Gibson's fretboard was not Rosewood at all, but actually it was Ebony.

It is my personal opinion that the difference is really more "feel" and "appearance" than anything. That being said, I definitely do favor Rosewood over Maple. All my guitars are Rosewood, except the SG. No maple for me ... they are nice, though.

Old Brazilian rosewood could be as dark as ebony. It also smells not unlike roses, thus the name.
The Indian rosewood used now is less dense, lighter and needs more frequent oiling. It also lacks the scent.

In my personal opinion, Brazilian Rosewood > Ebony > Madagascar Rosewood > Indian Rosewood.
There's also a very dark Indonesian wood that's sometimes sold as rosewood, but it's not even a related species, and worse than the rest.

That said, I have a Fender Select with a birdseye maple neck, and I love it.

Not in the 70s, but look at recent photos and you'll see maple all the time. Mind you, I didn't undertake a scientific study, but I haven't seen a rosewood neck in his hands for years.

You'll be telling me he always plays Fender guitars next ...

Well it's a new year and we haven't yet had one of those "boxers vs briefs" circle-jerks.

I think I'll just pop me a bag of Orville Redenbacher's finest then sit back and enjoy the parade.

After we resolve the maple vs rosewood question we should move on to alder vs ash.

Coke or Pepsi? I always thought that Coke had more bite but Pepsi was a little "sweeter."

I prefer to rosewood because of how it feels--especially as maple boards are usually finished, and rosewood boards are usually not.

No, you are wrong, there is no difference, it's all psychosomatic.

 Actually, that was a perfect description, and I agree.

We really should debate glass vs can. 8)

44 guitars, rosewood, lightly finished maple and heavy coated maple, plus a couple of ebony. They all sound different, but I can't attribute that to the woods (way too many other variables by the time the sound comes out of the amp). I think it's all what you think looks best on the color guitar you eyeing.

Type of wood does feel different under the fingers while playing though, especially bending.

As for Coke, gotta find the glass bottle with Coke made from sugar and not corn syrup.
