I recently got this Stratocaster and it seems to be a one-off, so I'm trying to figure out anything I can on it. The strange thing is, it has a "Fender Property" sticker on the back. Looking up the serial number from the neck it's an early 2000's MIM neck, but the part number states it as a Fat Strat with a Floyd Rose. However, the electronics seem to be American quality and the flat black finish isn't an available option. Has anyone seen one like this? Anyway to look up that expensed number online? I've been digging for hours with no luck. Thanks everyone!

Hi buddyhawke,

Is that "Gun Metal" or "Charcoal" instead of "Black"? The serial number and the model number (under the "Expensed" number), both indicate a MIM model.

The colour, flat finish and black and plastic are very very similar to a mim strat I have. It was a limited colour run for a year, black plastic with flat finish, I think there was 4 colours. It's a 2002 model. I can't remember seeing them in the catalogue with a FR though, and they didn't have the big headstock.

It's possible one of the bodies like mine has been routed for a FR. Is that label for Fenders internal use then?

well now.....that looks like a bit of an "ooooops" moment with the tag

buddyhawke, that tag is a tag used to control internal inventory within our facilities. There are various reasons for "expense". Proto's, models that are being displayed on walls, etc. So, yes there is tracking on the guitar but within Fender's internal domain(s). There may or may not be tracking of the serial number, but I'm doubting it considering the "999" color designation.
Suffice to say that whenever it left whichever building it came out of, the tag should have been removed. I'm guessing that it's probably a proto and possibly an employee sale.
I'll see if I can track it down after the weekend...........
All the best,
rob

Being the same year as my very similar strat, and the mention of a possible prototype, maybe it was a design considered for the run my strat was part of? Either way, nice for you to have a Fender 'oddity'!

EBay. It was listed in the "other" brands category and flew under most people's radar. I only found it by searching for strats, and the tiny keyboard on my phone caused me to spell it wrong.

and therein lies the "ooops". Let's just say that typically, those aren't meant for re-sale.

cheers,
rob

Sounds like it warrants some looking into Rob.

Why in gods name did they not produce that guitar. It looks fantastic. I'm not a FR guy but I would give that one a shot.

Hmmmm... maybe Fender's gonna have a job opening soon....

That sticker truly makes it unique from a collectable standpoint. Consider what the final bid would have been had it been properly categorized on ebay in the first place.

If it were me, I'd post it for twice what you paid and see what the Market brings. I bet it'd sell in a heartbeat!

The proceeds would allow you to get an even better guitar.

It's a conversational oddity to be sure, but you may be passing up large dollars by keeping it. If it gets played hard, it's value will certainly diminish.

OTOH, if it was purloined by some unscrupulous person, you'd be, knowingly or not, in possession of stolen goods. Fender could easily reclaim and sieze the guitar (though they'd likely come to some accomodation with you given the circumstances). I wouldn't be surprised if you heard more from Rob on that score, especially if it is a prototype.

cheers!
