Thanks for all the tips. I am self taught and have not really talked to other people about this. The Forum has been a nice place to get a little more exposure. I will definitely get a bigger tip and I got how the heat sinks work.

I think you make a good point here, using a Heat Sink to dissipate unwanted energy seems like a simple and inexpensive way to prevent damaging components. Although, from what I can hear, I don't think I've ruined any components due to excessive heat in one of my projects.

I've been mildly concerned enough to attach alligator clips as a poor mans Heat Sink to the leads on Caps before.

Costs nothing and "Perfects" my Tone & Sustain, I'm sure.

On other "sensitive" components, my clips weren't large enough to help. I'd like to hear how you go about attaching a Heat Sink to a Pot (Potentiometer)? By attaching to the Case away from the solder point? Is your "Heat Sink" jaw wide enough for that? :?:

Actually, for a Pot, the issue is usually one of too little heat, not too much. The Pot itself acts like a heat sink so I doubt the innards get too hot.

Besides, these wouldn't suffer irreversable effects of excessive heat exposure the way a Resistor or Capacitor can.

I'm sure there are many here, incl. myself, who've gotten away with not using them. Not using a heat sink isn't a guarantee your component will 'grenade', only that it could.

When the solution is so easy and inexpensive, why not go for it? I think it's just good practice so I use them.

cheers!

OK, I just plugged in this Weller soldering station and set it on 750 degrees. WOW. touched the back of a pot and instant melt and solder! Why didn't I get something like this years ago??? And for soldering switches, turned it down to 600 and fast and easy wire soldering. I am happy!

I need to get a new soldering iron for custom guitar wiring. Any suggestion for one that gets hot really fast and is trouble free?

After having a Weller iron burn up about a million tips and buying another one and it doing the same thing.... I was at Sears and decided to try their Craftsman brand it has a warranty and they sell a pack of 3 tips there, a flat a point and a fine point. It has been much better than the Weller and I use it a lot.

Do you remember what Weller you had? I just picked up a new Weller WESD51 soldering station. Seems to work well. I had a lot of trouble with the tip on my Weller 100/140 soldering gun making contact, thus not heating properly. Guess I will see how this station holds up...

I had this one made in Mexico, imagine that? Another made in Mexico piece of junk.

I imagine if you got that station its probably a lot better I will look into those too.

I got this at Sears and I was just like well I will try this anything has got to be better than that Mexican Junk. It is just awesome I can do pot kettle grounds and everything.

They have replacement tips at the store too.

This is the one I bought. I think it is several steps up from the Weller pencil iron you had. Seems to have great reviews. I watched this tread and read a lot of reviews before buying it and this seems to have a lot of goods ones. A few people said they had it die on them.... and like most things these days, is most likely made in China or some place! :(

It didnt show the pic. I find the made in Taiwan pencil I have now is much better than Wellers made in Mexico one.

This is yours and it looks very cool and Im sure it works great.
I just wanted an old school one that worked like they used to. The Mexican Weller pencil seems to be a disposable one nowadays. I had one of them back in the 80s and it was not made in Mexico. Oh well progress and all right?

To be honest, when I first started wiring guitars I went through a couple of those pencil irons. I remember holding them for a looooong time trying to solder a pot. I threw them away and thought to myself they all must be junk. So I resorted to the Weller 100/140 BIG soldering gun. Man when it works it does the job! So that is one reason I created this thread. I had fear about any type of pencil irons. I see now that you can get them that really do work! I just finished wiring up a custom curly maple top Strat and man this was nice!

Ok, just finished the guitar below with this new soldering work station. WOW, made things go fast and much easier. This is a 1998 deluxe Strat Neck on a chambered Mahogany body with a curly Maple top—made by Warmoth. I did the Lace Sensor Chromes Domes—Hot Dually in the bridge with standard domes in the neck and middle positions. This is wired like a Strat Ultra. Position 3 is Neck + Bridge. The guitar tuned in perfect. Custom Shop quality really. Action is great all the way down to the end with no buzzing.
