Stay away from cold heat iron. If you want an easy to handle and heats area fast use a gas iron. Portasol an Weller make them.

I just use a 20 watt Weller iron and a 40 watt Weller iron. Both with interchangable tips. I have no need for fancy soldering/desoldering stations as I never make a mistake and I never change components after I build something. All my guitar and amp builds are perfect from the get go.

I do a lots of amps repair and I need to desolder often , but I use manual pump desolder . I work great not expensive but it's big to have enough vacuum .

I was thinking about a desoldering sation but I'm afraid it hole may often jam . Mine hand pump almost never jam.

I just use the little vacuum pump (the kind that you press down the plunger and then press down the trigger button). Works great on my hand wired amps. If I was doing production work I could see investing in a solder/desolder station but not for normal home use.

Why not use the solder wick method?

IMHO, it works as well, or even better, than a solder sucker. :D

cheers!

Solder wicks do a good job.

I have it only for printed circuit or very small amout of solder . I have 2 manual pumps , pluger type . The small one and the bigger one. For point to point circuit .

Solder wick is totally worthless on something like this:

Or this:

Or even this:

That's why.

I have a Weller BP645 Battery powered cordless soldering iron. Heats up pretty fast, great for tight spaces, and works awesome. google it, you may still be able to buy one.

Who else has used the sucker bulbs to remove solder?
Also I find the braid to very useful.

Man great tips. Thanks you guys! When one talks about a gas type soldering iron I already have one like this:

Years ago when I first started soldering I used one of these:

Of course this could be the real way to go today! Hight-tech stuff here:

I have that exact soldering iron, inherited from my Dad, who inherited it from his Dad, circa 1933.

I remember my Dad using it to sweat copper pipe when I was a kid.

I've never even plugged it in due to the silk/cotton cord and dubious 2-prong plug.

cheers!
