I need to get a new soldering iron for custom guitar wiring. Any suggestion for one that gets hot really fast and is trouble free?

Are these small tipped soldering irons good for quickly heating up the back of a large pot like found in a Strat to solder a group of ground wires? How long does it have to be turned on before you can really start working with it??

I'v been using a Hakko FX601 iron and some times a Portasol butane iron, now that gets hot supper fast.

I use a Hakko FX-888D.

70W Temps from 50°-480°C

low recovery time. I like it a lot, much more than the Weller WSD81 it replaced.

Decent features at a good price.

cheers!

I have the 701A++ and it is a very good solder/desolder station. Heats up in about 3 min, adjustable control, separate digital readouts. I tried it because I wanted a solder/desolder station and it was very inexpensive. Turns out to be a very good station, and cheaper than a Xytronic (which I have also used extensively, great station also), and way cheaper than a Weller station (my favorite).

If you have to work only one time on a guitar and some few solder in a year a Weller pencil Iron at $20 will do the job .
The only problem with pencil iron is they are not temperature controlled . When too hot , tips come "rusted / oxyded " ( sorry I don't know the right word )and won't solder and you need to clean it or disconnect the iron few minutes.

This not happened with soldering station .

Remember all old amps where built with pencil iron . That was the only tool 40 years ago .

But a soldering station is the best . By some spare tips, they could be unavalaible in few years

Trouble free? I am still using the Weller digital soldering station I bought in 1987...still working fine, heats up fast...and...tips are still available.

fwiw.

Cheers.

Thanks for all the tips. For all the custom work I have done for years I have used a Weller 100/120 watt gun. When it works it does a great job. For doing ground wires on a pot or even doing 5-way switches, it is great—when the tip gets hot properly. I constantly have to loosen and tighten the screws that hold the tip in place. It is like there is connectivity issue. If I pull the tip and sand the area that make contact with the screws, wow it heats up super fast. Then a week later it is slow as molasses. I have gotten lazy and have been squirting some contact cleaner down in the holes where the tip goes in and then use it and it works for a few times. Then repeat the loosen and re-tighten ceremony again. Pain in the b-hind.

I never have favored the small tipped soldering irons and they seems not to put out enough heat for a group of wires soldered on the back of a pot. I want lots of heat fast to make a good pool of solder and then have it cool off as fast as possible as this will do a lot less damage to the pot (my theory!) The main things is I want something that is fast, not only to prevent too much heat spreading all over, but to knock the job out fast. I can wire a complete guitar in minutes if the solding gun is working right.

Have any of you tried the cold/heat guns? That looks like an interesting technology.

Never use a heat gun on a guitar , the magnetic field of the gun can demagetize pickups

Cold heat gun are more expensive and may not work long time .

Additional tips are cheap.

It heats up in a hurry. Nice digital thermometer tells you how warm it is. Plus you can punch the button and idle it at 200 degrees.
