Hi,

I see a lot of Black Strat's modelled on Gilmour's famous guitar on this and other forums.....I hardly ever see any Red one's. Maybe because of the EMG expense?

Anyone else here built one?

or

anyone else using the DG20 pickup set?

If so - show us your Strat and explain why you love it! Pros & Cons

Mine is a 1997 Deluxe PowerHouse Strat body with a 2011 CP50's neck :

The Black Strat saw him through most of the classic Pink Floyd albums and again at Live8 and the 2006 tour, so it's no surprise that it's a legend. IMO, the 2006 sound is the best of his career.

The red one doesn't have the looks (IMO obviously), although he did some great things with it.

I think it has to do with the period and the mods. The Black Strat has more of the Gilmour DNA in it, I guess.

Hello JestersTear1: I have the DG20 set in a Strat, though it's not a chrome red one. I love 'em. Not precisely a vintage Strat tone, obviously, but ideal for Gilmouresque sounds.

Of course, there's always the problem of stowing the 9v battery. That puts many players off...

Cheers - C

FYI… our friend ZZDoc modded his 1997 American Standard with the DG20 pickup system.

For the battery Arne chose the Clapton method of hiding it beneath the tremolo cavity but found that job tedious because of the swimming pool rout.

I finally had a chance to play the CS Black Strat, and it is beautiful. Not even so much the sound as that can be manipulated, but the feel of it. I suppose it breaks the adage of never meet your heroes, but I am glad I did. As for the Red Strat, I think that it is a wonderful guitar also. Some of the best work Pink Floyd ever did either started with that guitar or was replicated with that guitar (The Pulse CD and DVD come to mind here) (Division Bell)

Not sure if this really adds anything to the conversation, but I am bored at work and oddly enough thumbing through the book by Phil Taylor at this moment.

I haven't built one. I gave up pretending to be any other guitarist around the age of 15.

Hi chromeface: less tedious than hiding the battery in the control cavity, though. Imagine having to take the pickguard off every time you want to change the battery! That's what some folks do, though.

My own method was to install a battery holder in the back of the body (during a major refit):

I completely get why most people wouldn't want to go that route, though.

BTW: where's the battery on Gilmour's red Strat?

Ceri… I totally agree, a battery compartment is a much easier way to replace dreaded batteries.

Keep in mind some battery holders are usually secured by two screws or more.

The main reason I got a Deluxe Powerhouse body - there is already a cavity for the battery from the original mid boost circuit :

I believe Gilmour's is under the pickguard by the control knobs..
:D

In that I stopped the trem with a wood block, I removed two springs and stowed the battery in that space. In the OP's project, I viewed the use of the Powerhouse strat body as a sensible alternative to being obliged to route an a la Clapton space in the side wall of the trem cavity. In that Ceri's project was a complete rehab, opting for a rear-rout approach, his decision to install a battery box was consistent with the build. I would rather Fender had used the same option for the Powerhouse guitar rather than obliging the player to have to grab a screwdriver. I can't imagine that the difference in cost would have been significant, and certainly would have been a more professional finish. Perhaps Ceri could be persuaded to post the link to the build for those of you who have not seen the finished result of Ceri's project

Recall that Gilmour obtained two '57RI's from Fender in the early days of the new company. One was the red. The other, white...[NOT the famous 001.]. According to Phil Taylor, the EMG's were needed to deal with the interference they were getting from their lighting systems as their visuals become more sophisticated. The necks on those guitars were the same as the on on the Black Strat presently. I have one of those guitars but still prefer my Clapton's neck overall. If I were going for the vibe, I would look for one of those FSR '57 RI's in CR finish, swap out the electronics for the EMG SA's, and the pots that go with it. You could float the trem with 3 springs and still find room for the battery in that space.

Or make a trem blocker with six N-cells or AAAA batteries. What could possibly go wrong.

No argument with the player and his tone from heaven, but don't discount Bradshaw's floorboards and all the other 'toys'. When I first heard the second guitar solo in The Wall, on the 'Pulse' CD, I thought it was Dave. You'd could have knocked me over with a feather when I learned it was Tim.
