Hello, I have been hunting for these things for a while. The Locking Tuner Machine Caps that were made from 1983 - 1992 is apparently what I need if my studies are correct. They are flat in color...not shiney like the one's sold here on Fender.com which I think are PING. Schaller nor Stewart M was able to help me. I have purchased some but they do not thread correct. Below is my EBAY findings from two Model Numbers 0994932000(wrong) and 0994946000(???)

This is a desription from an EBAY Seller:Here is a full set of 6 brand new genuine Fender/Schaller brushed locking tuner caps, Fender part number 0994932000. Please note that these caps may not fit early versions of the Schaller locking tuners used on Fender guitars mostly between 1983 and 1992 as the tuners were manufactured differently. Shipping is included in price for USA, international will be calculated.

QUESTION: Does anyone know for sure if the link above with model number 0994946000 would work on my 1985 Strat Deluxe/Plus? Thank You (just made more than one purchase and ready to be sure this time)

There was no Strat Plus/Deluxe Plus in 1985. Fender guitars from that era were Japanese-made.

The Plus series didn't came into surface until 1987, with basses following two years later.

At production restart It took Fender over two years to use up the 1985 serial numbers they already had before the shut down.

The Fullerton factory was shut down in late 1984.

Ok, you're smarter than everyone else about the history of Fender Guitars. Thank you for gracing us with your presence.

Now, can you use your massive base of knowledge to help the OP?

It ultimately doesn't matter WHEN it was made, he just needs some replacement parts...

I think that's the point - the OP needs to show us more about his early Strat Plus. He calls it a 1985 but they weren't made until 1987. Some photos of the tuners might help us figure out if the replacement caps the OP found on ebay will fit his tuners.

I don't know about the ebay sellers claim that the Fender/Schaller tuners changed circa 1993 - I just don't recall. That would probably be a question for Xhefri or someone else who has had a lot of the early ones go through their hands. Me, I just picked them up and tried them out in stores back in the day as I wound up going with a PRS instead for most of the 1990s.

Actually chrome it was February 85 to October 85 and from past reading Fenders book The Fender telecaster it says that it took until 1988 to use up the E4 serial numbers and that no E5 were ever ordered subsequenly no E5, E6, E7 numbers were ever applied to American made guitars. They do exist on Japanese made guitars and there wee a few EE for export.
I knew I read something about those years I thought it was E5's but it was E4's so I had to take the book off the shelf. Can't remember it all you no but curiosity got me.
for those parts.
Deebozz you may try angela.com they have a lot of new old stock parts.

DeeBozz,

You need to PM Xhefri, who wrote the unofficial book on the strat plus. Chances are they will fit your strat, and for $14 its probably worth the hassle (those tuning pegs are small on the locking tuners :P) even if they dont thread. But either way give him a message, super helpful bloke.

Post some pictures of the tuner/tuners. If they are Schaller tuners they should work. It is possible that you have Sperzel locking tuners. For a short period of time Fender uesd Sperzel tuners.

Hi DeeBozz: I don't want to be the voice of doom, but there was a guy on this Forum a few months ago looking for a replacement thumb wheel for one of the older Schaller/Fender locking tuners, he searched very hard including contacting both Fender and Schaller themselves to see if they happened to have some old parts knocking around, and he couldn't find the right part. It seems the spec for the thread inside the cap changed at some point and the old style appears impossible to source.

There are some good suggestions above on where you could try looking for New-Old-Stock, and certainly you shouldn't give up too easily. But I've a nasty feeling this story could end with a whole new set of locking tuners having to be fitted.

Still, best of luck - C

I am not sure when the Schaller locking tuners were first made, but I do know the Strat Plus' came off the assembly line mid to late 1987. The problem brought out here about finding replacement caps for the older Plus locking tuners is a big one. Here is the problem, some time late in the 1990s Schaller changed the thread design of the tuners, so even if you by a set of brushed Schallers tuner caps that are sold as Strat Plus items, they will not work on the older Schaller tuners. Really a bummer. So one either has to pick up and old set of tuners and save them for the caps or replacements if one goes bad, or hope to find someone on eBay selling just the older style caps, or simply replace the whole set with the newer Schaller brushed locking tuners, which are advertised as Fender Schaller Locking tuners. No other caps will work....I have several broken sets and I covet these few extra caps I have so when I pick up a Strat Plus missing one I have an extra that will fit.

So my '93 has the old ones?

Thanks in advance, I always thought I could just buy a new cap if I ever lost one...

Now I will be extra careful with them if I play that guitar again...

Yeppers, unless someone replaced them recently. I cant understand why they would change the thread design after years of having it be one way on the the Plus series. I even bought a new set of caps that were labeled by Fender as Strat Plus Shaller Locking Tuners Knobs and they were the new thread design and would not work on my older Plus guitars. I was hoping they were new old stock when I got them, but was wrong—and I might add, should have not been labeled that way on the Fender packaging!
