Hi, I was hoping someone might be able to help me with a question I have about my Fender american standard (2012) I purchased it recently and have been noticing that the neck looks almost like a flamed neck (its more obvious in the light) I was wondering if this is normal. I actually like the look of it but I haven't seen it before on american standards.

Here are some pictures

Purely a random manufacturing accident. Some lumber used in regular production instruments exhibits this desirable trait. I have a MIJ Strat neck that resembles yours.

It's got a bit of a "flame" to it but I guess it wasn't really enough to make the neck blank worthy of passing to the Custom Shop. In the usual variation of wood patterns you'll always get the odd bit of standard maple with a bit of figuring to it, you've been lucky to get a nicely figured neck there.

Too lightly colored and wide in places to market as Flame or tiger striped.

True.

But just enough figuring to add some elegance to a regular production guitar.

Thanks for the info! While its obviously not got much of a flame to it, it does look quite nice and it gives it a bit of character I suppose!

I've been helping my neighbour's kid build a kit guitar. It was cheaper than a Squier yet has some pretty good flame on the neck. No doubt not quite fine enough to get selected out by a guy at the saw mill - and therefore it ends up amongst all the rest in a big batch sold to a factory.

For that matter, I've seen nice flame on MIM Standard Strats - I think guys have sometimes posted pictures showing that on this Forum.

Maple is like that: it's the luck of the draw.

Congrats on an attractive neck. You'll never confuse your guitar's fingerprint with anyone else's! :)

Cheers - C
