I have a 10 year old strat that I absolutely love. However when I'm playing unamplified there is a noticeable rattle coming from in the neck. I only hear it if I hit the strings hard, but if I'm playing softly or amplified it doesn't happen, or I don't hear it. It happened before a few years ago, but went away for the most part. I live in Upstate New York and I suspect it might have something to do with the drastic temperature changes we experience. I don't think the truss rod is completely broken because my neck is still straight. Any insight on this would be appreciated.

This happen with my 1995 strat , : Short answer ; J ust have to thigtened truss rod nut without put too much pressure to change neck bow .

Long story ;To remove rattle , I had to "play " with truss rod nut many times , tightened and loosen because neck curve change . Each time I adjust truss rod nut , this fix the problem for few weeks .

After many adjustments ( few months ) no more rattle . This is since many years now

I bought this guitar used / second hand in 2002 . Pretty sure this guitar never had a truss rod adjutment before .

Did your your guitar had some truss rod adjustment since yo buy it ( new ? )

It may also be caused by climate/temperature/humidity changes. Try a humidifier in the guitar case for a week or so, see if that helps.

You should check that everything is as tight as it should be and I would suggest that you check the nuts on the tuners as these tend to vibrate loose.

Keeping the guitar at an even temperature as much as you can helps to alleviate the expansions and contractions that exacerbate such issues.

Hope you cure the problem.

You're positive it's in the neck? one of my guitars just started doing something similar, but I think it's the tremolo springs. I need to dampen them, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

There are different strengths of tremolo springs, you could try some heavier duty ones. The various springs available are colour coded Black, Chrome and Zinc, in ascending rates of tension.

Hi guys, I figure I'd do a follow up reply since other people might have this issue.

In my case it was the truss rod. I simply tightened the truss rod adjustment screw between ~1/4 - 1/2 turn. This turn was not significant enough to change the shape of the neck. The neck didn't move at all. Now, the guitar is singing again with no rattle!
