Hi, I have an 2000 American de-luxe Strat with noiseless pickups. I have a couple of questions:-

Can I retro fit the S-1 switching system to my guitar?

On the assumption that it's possible, can I just replace the volume pot with a split shaft 250K S-1 pot, Fender part no. 0061256000?

I see there is also a 500K version, 0061257000, but maybe that's only for the HH Strat...?

If it's the right one, I'm guessing that I will have to rout the body a little deeper because of the extra length ...?

Also, do I need to get a different 5 way switch?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Paul

No, you need an extra capacitor and a complete rewiring.

Quote:
American Deluxe Stratocaster

On the American Deluxe Stratocaster (and its left-handed, HSS, ash-body and V-neck versions), the S-1 switch functions quite differently than it does on Telecaster models, adding five more pickup combinations to the five already offered by standard Stratocaster wiring. With 10 total pickup wiring options then, S-1-equipped American Deluxe Stratocasters offer enormous tonal versatility.

When not in use, the S-1 switch doesn’t affect standard Stratocaster wiring, which is:

Position one: bridge pickup only
Position two: bridge and middle pickups wired in parallel
Position three: middle pickup only
Position four: middle and neck pickups wired in parallel
Position five: neck pickup only

The S-1 switch offers five additional pickup wiring options when engaged:

Position one: all three pickups wired in series
Position two: bridge and middle pickups wired in series
Position three: middle and neck pickups wired in series
Position four: bridge and neck pickups wired out of phase, with a special tone capacitor
Position five: bridge and middle pickups wired in series and out of phase, in parallel with neck pickup

The HSH model with its dual Modern Twinhead humbuckers uses a super 5-way 4-megapole pickup selector but lacks off the S1.

Hi Paul. Nobody on this Forum knows the S1 switch like my friend Andybighair. Your retro fit is perfectly do-able, and I think you will find the diagram Andy drew up on this thread useful for what you want:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=71024

For that, and I think most S1 applications, you will need the five-way Superswitch (available from Stew-Mac and elsewhere). But you will not need to rout the body: S1-adapted pots fit in a standard Strat control cavity.

If you want more S1 possibilities check out Andy's three x S1 switch harness which he used in his Big Hairy Strat Build, pics on this page:

After looking at those photos I usually need some valium...

Cheers - C

Hey Paul,

I have a Dec. '03 Am Dlx, an early Version 2, with the new (at the time) S-1 switching and SCN pups. Fortunately I didn't have to wire it up but I did take some pics of the innards.

The S-1 switch and Double Wafer 5 way Super Switch shouldn't require any routing.

This is a link to the Fender Service Diagram for my guitar model, showing detail on the wiring and switching effect: http://support.fender.com/service_diagrams/stratocaster/010-1302A_SISD.pdf. Bear in mind that the early S-1 switches were wired differently than those more recent and many different variations are possible.

Hope you find this helpful.

- Dan
