I bought this nice looking strat which appears brand new off of my friend for $400. Can anyone let me know what kind of strat this is? https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=12986681E5E38FDC!1071&authkey=!ANIcHj5ccAgnrMg&ithint=folder%2c. Please see the photos were i took it apart.

Thanks !

Hi there email fender at consumerrelations@fender.com and give them the serial.
They should be able to provide details which should match your strat and if it does not then we have a problem.
To me it looks like possibly a highway one neck just before they went to the larger headstock bolted onto some aftermarket body but I have been wrong before.
Does you friend know anything about its history?
I am sure some with more experience with this will chime in with a better idea than mine. :D

The lack of any manufacturing stamps or stickers is unusual to say the least.
The neck pocket work is untidy - the neck didn't originally come with that guitar body.
The truss rod fillet at the headstock does not look right to me - it's a different shape to the one on my 2011 Deluxe Stratocaster, that's for sure.
The heel end of the neck looks unfinished - shouldn't there be a metal end piece in there somewhere?

My conclusion is it's a fake, but for $400.00 what do you expect?
Does it play well and sound good - if so enjoy it for what it is, but I don't think the guitar came out of any of Fender factory.

+1

FMIC did not manufacture this guitar.

I can smell the funk from here...

Some of the sloppiest (unfinished) carpentry I've seen on a guitar. Look at the mess they made of the pickguard.

Yes, the headstock decal and tuners say "Fender"...but...nothing else about that neck says Fender.

Pickups?

Not a Fender product for sure.

One more thing...we don't get a rear view of the body...but if you look in the background of some pictures, you can see a trem cover with non-offset middle screws...

Case closed.

Mahogany body with flame maple looks nice, the under the hood stuff is not so pretty.
It is a genuine fake, though as already said, if it plays well just enjoy it.
On the other hand it could be the basis of a project with new pickups, pots and switch and... removal of the Fender name.

The truss rod fillet is plugged with plastic. I believe all real American Made Fenders use walnut.

I missed it being plastic, but you're right, it is plastic.
And it doesn't go very deep down the truss rod adjustment hole - you can see maple just before you get to the top of the truss rod.

I had my suspicions, though the tone is nice enough even with these pickups that I'm not horribly upset. Though I am going to inquire with the seller as to its origin and there will be some not so nice words. I highly doubt he was aware of the non authenticity (he is good friend).

The tone is surprisingly nice, tonight I am going to record some samples and post them... Along with the for sale ad.

Or maybe I will keep it, what do you guys think ?

If the guitar plays well and sounds good, keep it and use it. Ultimately, all guitars are nothing more than lumber, steel, plastic, copper, and brass.

If disposal is your decision do not post the ad here -- buying and selling are prohibited on this forum.

If you do decide to sell it on then sell it for what it is, a Fender counterfeit, and not as the real deal.

Thanks for all of the feedback ... At least I know.

I was considering keeping it seeing as it doesn't sound too bad. Today i tried to correct some of the bowing in the neck... only to find that the key is completely stripped down to nothing making any adjustment impossible... I realized this shortly after restringing with Medium gauge strings, and due to the increased tension the nice neck that I actually kinda liked is now pretty uncomfortable and sounds pretty raunchy

:(
