I heard from a good source that the 60th anniv. CP 50's Strat, available in March, has a Desert Sand nitro finish on the body and the neck is also finished in nitro. Plus, a Fender Pro Tweed hard case is included.

Assuming the info I got is correct, it seems like it would show signs of wear pretty quickly if played on a regular basis, with the nitro finish and gold hardware. Considering the wear "issue" and the fact that it is a commemorative model, is this a guitar that most people buy for collectibility or to play? I realize there is no right or wrong answer to this; I'm just looking for some other perspectives about this.

My current CP 50's is my favorite Strat and, if I bought one of these 60th anniversary editions, I wouldn't want to just leave it in the case, afraid it would get damaged or deteriorate (mainly the gold plating). I just play guitar here at home as a hobby and the kids have left the nest so, even if I play it, the risk of damage is pretty low. So, I'd play it.. The CP 50's Strat has all the features I like and I was considering picking up another one if it was different enough for me to justify it to myself. In this case, the difference in finish and the fact that its a commemorative edition has pretty much convinced me I "need" one..

Would you purchase one to play or to keep as a collectible, or both? If you have one of the previous commemorative Strats, do you worry about it getting a bit "roadworn" from use?

I see no reason to believe there is anything special about any limited edition guitar. It may indeed have unique specs, but so will the next batch of limited guitars that is made available. It's a marketing gimmick. The only question that anyone should be asking is how a guitar plays, in which case, you may find a guitar which costs half as much a feels whole lot better in your hands.

If the 60th Anni neckplate is the object of desire, wait til they pop up on ebay.

+1

Then install it on your own custom-built Strat.
