In my opinion that body shouldn't have been anywhere near the 'US standard sunburst' pile. That needed a solid colour finish.

thats is a pretty typical grain pattern for Alder wood. Nothing wrong with that. Besides its totally visable if you dont like it dont buy it. The consumer has the choice

+1

Back in the Fullerton days, that body would've been earmarked for a Duco custom-color finish.

First off, it's not a "grain pattern". I do some cabinet work on the side and Alder most certainly doesn't look like that. As far as I can tell it's cracks in the wood from drying. Second, I went to quite a few guitar shops around Nashville checking out their burst strats to compare to mine... NONE of them add those cracks in the wood... not a single one.

Cant be the grain pattern as it doesnt follow the grain. I agree , it shouldnt have been used for a sunburst finish. I would have thought that sunburst finishes would get higher grade bodies, but clearly this one did not.

ok ....then I am wrong. Sorry.
next question..... if you know all this stuff about wood why did you buy the guitar in the first place????

BTW....alder wood does have or can have check/dark streak marks in it exactly as you see in your guitar. Some pieces more than others. It is common to alder.

Personally, I like the dark streaks in the wood. I'd pay more for it...

Do you mean is common alder trees have these check / dark streak marks ....Or you mean is common because Fender have to fix damaged many alder wood body ?

IMO we never see that check/dark streak marks on old guitars ? Better quality woods in '50, '60 and '70

Am I wrong ?

you are not wrong.....but
go check out alder wood images on the internet. You will see these dark streaks. As mentioned some pieces have more or less marks. I am not debating if the body in this particular posters guitar should have been a burst finish job but its not a damaged or dry cracked piece of wood.
