Here's some pictures of the fret-board on my new Fender Strat American Standard. As you can see the edge of fret-board looks like it's either peeled in spots or the finished has flaked off. This is starting to bother me more and more lately, especially compared to my MIM Strat which has a perfect neck.

Would this bother you enough to return it? Would this be covered under warranty? (since I'm past the window of return because it was a Christmas gift bought in October)

Contrasted against my Fender Blacktop MIM strat - the fretboard is absolutely perfect.

It also has what appears to be cracks in the wood and then filled in before the finish was applied. You can't feel the cracks, you can only see them under the finish. Notice the vertical lines -

Contact the place you purchased it from or find a local Fender Dealer or Service Center and talk with them. They are the only ones who can assist you now.

So you agree that this looks like poor quality?

Agreed.

This is not the quality expected from any Fender factory.

Was this 'bought off the rack'? Had others been playing it before it was purchased? Or, was it sent direct to you from an online seller? I see some plastic covering the bridge pickup...

Contact the store or bring it back in person, depending on the store and your location. Send an email to Fender Customer Service (though Rob usually monitors this forum anyway).

You should have a perfect guitar at the beginning...you should be able to ding it up on your own.

Cheers.

It would bother me too. Did you buy it on the web or local?

Thanks for the reply. I bought it new through Chicago Music Exchange (a brick and mortar that sells online also) and they shipped it to me. Unfortunately I live too far away to take it to them in person and since it was a Christmas gift it's outside of their 15 day return policy. I will give them a call anyway to see if they have anything to offer. I may call Fender if that doesn't work out.

I just talked to a manager at Chicago Music Exchange (Alex). He was extremely courteous and agreed the quality wasn't typical of a new American Standard. He's going to speak with the Fender rep about the issues and see if the guitar can be replaced. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks everyone!

Chicago Music Exchange is going to replace the guitar. They are truly a stand-up company to deal with. Thanks!!!

I don't understand why you live the store without checking the guitar . Do you play with at the store ?

Maybe he wasn't the original purchaser:

I presume it was given to the OP as a gift unless it was a gift to himself.

Considering the store is 585 miles from my house, it was ordered online and shipped to my house. Being a Christmas gift from my wife I didn't get much time to play/inspect it.

the chips on the neck/finger board finish is bogus work. Hope they address that for you.
There are no "cracks" on the body. That is just grain fill before finishing. That look is typical of alder wood.
